Abigail and Hannah were the best of friends. They regularly referred to each other as ‘soulmates’, and their personalities were the perfect compliment to each other.
Abigail was shy and quiet, and eternally grateful for any good thing that happened to her. Hannah was outgoing and boisterous, and just a little bit spoilt. Abigail taught Hannah humility, while Hannah taught Abigail to love herself.
Both girls were extremely kind, good hearted and fiercely loyal. They would stand up for each other and always had eachother’s backs. There were no secrets between them, and they were so close that they regularly finished each other’s sentences. When they were apart, they missed each other terribly, and it felt like a piece of them was missing.
Hannah’s father was a wealthy developer, and her mother was a beautiful former model. Although they were wealthy, they were not snobs and had accepted Abigail like a second daughter the first time Hannah brought her home for a play date.
They recognised that she didn’t have a lot, and sent an extra packed lunch with Hannah to school every day. Hannah had a magnetic personality, and made friends fast. By extension, Abigail made the same friends at the same pace, and soon the shy little girl with no one to come to her birthday parties became the popular girl who everyone wanted to be around.
Hannah’s father was developing a large shopping mall in the town - a lot of small towns might have taken issue with this, but this particular town was aware of the need to bring in more business and visitors, and they were welcomed with open arms. The town had fallen on hard times in recent years, and the extra income and job opportunities that the mall brought with it were a much needed change.
Mr Tate, Hannah’s father, held his meetings with investors at the diner. It was the perfect place for it - the food was good, and the coffee was even better. Wealthy business people tipped well, and Laura found herself better off than she and Abigail had ever been before. Abigail was soon a healthy weight, and had a normal life. Things were still tight, but more like the average family and less like people who were one day’s missed work away from homelessness.
Abigail sat on the edge of Hannah’s bed. It was the day after Hannah’s 18th birthday, which meant that it was time for Hannah’s annual closet purge. Hannah chose a theme colour every year, and got a whole new wardrobe after her birthday to reflect her choice for the upcoming year. Orange had been Abigail’s least favourite year, but this past year was Hannah’s blue phase, and she’d worn some amazing outfits that Abigail couldn’t wait to get her hands on.
Although things were better financially, and Abigail had clothes that fit her, her mother could never afford they types of clothes that Hannah wore. Every year, Hannah would give Abigail first pick at her closet, before selling and donating what was leftover. While Hannah would wear an item of clothing maybe once or twice, Abigail would find a new way to wear it, and piece together different items she’d amassed over the years. She’d even received some unopened makeup, if Hannah felt that it would not compliment her current wardrobe.
It had gotten more difficult to take Hannah’s hand me downs since the girls had gone through puberty. Hannah had inherited her mother’s model figure; she was tall and slender, and a designer’s dream to dress. She had swapped out her glasses for contact lenses, and she’d often get coloured lenses to match her outfits. She was a beautiful girl, and had been offered numerous modelling contracts over the years. Her pursuits were more in line with her father’s interests, as she had a keen eye for business and a natural talent for marketing.
Hannah was shorter - probably due to her years of malnourishment that she’d suffered as a child - but puberty had been kind to her. She was slim but curvy, and as Hannah always said, she had been “blessed with a booty”.
Their body differences meant that jackets were usually fair game, shirts were touch and go, and pants and skirts were a dead end, unless they were stretchy or Abigail could hem them. The girls had had the same sized feet since they were 13, which meant that Abigail had quite a large collection of designer shoes from Hannah’s closet.
‘What’s your new colour, Han?’ Asked Abigail, curiously. She always got to be the first to know, and this filled her with a certain satisfaction.
‘Ah babe, I think it’s time for my dark era. Lots of black with a sexy red lip!’ Hannah grinned.
Abigail chuckled and started rifling through the closet, while things were still hung up. Once Hannah started to purge, the mountain of clothing would be near impossible to sort through.
She stopped on a beautiful, soft, cropped black leather jacket. She vaguely remembered Hannah wearing it once. It was feminine yet tough, with some studs and chains around the shoulders.
‘I suppose you want to keep this for your dark era?’ She asked coyly.
‘Oh god no Abs, cropped and this long torso don’t work. That’s all yours!’ Smiled Hannah, already rifling through her closet and unceremoniously throwing clothes over her shoulder into a big pile in the centre of the room.
‘This would look killer on you!’ She said, pulling out a royal blue short jumpsuit. Abigail doubted it would fit her, but she obligingly started to undress and pulled it on. It fit like a glove, accentuating her curves and making her feel amazing.
‘God Abs, you could make anything look sexy. You are totes wearing that to my party on Saturday!’
Abigail smiled, looking for shoes to pair the jumpsuit with. She loved a pair of tan, thigh high boots, but since Hannah’s party would be at the clubhouse, they would get hot and uncomfortable fast.
She finally settled on some knee high black gladiator sandals, and Hannah gave her a bag to pack all the other bits and pieces she had chosen.
‘So you’re sleeping over on Friday, I have Bella and Beau coming to do our hair and makeup for the party. It’s gonna be so awesome!’ Said Hannah excitedly. Bella and Beau were her mother’s personal hair and makeup artists, and whenever Abigail had been to a Hannah party, they always made her feel incredible.
‘Can’t wait, bestie!’ She smiled.
