Seconds rolled into minutes and minutes into hours, yet I struggled with the pangs of hunger that struck me with each second. I was left all alone in the room. There was no maid to come check on me or anything to at least, make me feel better.
My wounds had begun to heal and the pains had relieved me even more. A sigh escaped my lips as I walked towards the window, staring at the maids who were downstairs, playing and giggling while each one had their meal in their hand. My lips parted into a smile, causing my dry lips to split.
I wished I was like them….it was better being a maid than a Luna with no life of her own. I was certain I wasn’t the Luna to the Alpha and every other person. The maids were simply honoring me because of the wedding.
Eaton… despite the fact that he had hurt me so much, I could not stop thinking about him. I didn’t want to make excuses for him but I could not help but wonder why he was so cruel to me. Of course, I had never set my eyes on him before I was sold to him, so why was he being so wicked to me? Perhaps he was being cruel to everyone and not me alone?
Exhausted, I laid on the bed. My thoughts were consumed with a lot of jumbled thoughts. I wish I could run away or perhaps, do something that would make me safe. I shut my eyes in surrender, but no sooner had I slept when I was forced to open my eyes.
“Hey….” A voice suddenly called and tapped me on my shoulder. My eyelids fluttered open to see who it was. Lady Anne? “Shhhh…” She placed her hands to my lips, causing me to be quiet. “Do not say a word. Let us leave as soon as we can before the Alpha finds out.” She held my wrist.
I stood up immediately, my brows arched. Was this some sort of set up? I knew so well that she didn’t like me. Why then was she pretending to care so much about me?
“Escape, why?” I questioned once again and she arched her brows as well.
“What do you mean? Do you want to remain here and continue to be tortured by the Alpha? Is that what you want? Is that the life you want? Tell me?!”
“No, not at all. I am just surprised.. that…”
“That?”
“We both know you do not like me at all. Why are you helping me? Is this a trap? Did the Alpha put your up to this?” I questioned, staring at her suspiciously.
“I put her up to this.” A voice suddenly spoke, drawing my attention to the owner. It was the lady who had served me tea. She had a smile on her face as she walked towards me. Relief washed through me. She was nice to me hence there was no reason to be scared.
“I see what you go through. I know you aren’t happy being here. I know you want to escape after all the Alpha has done to you hence I decided to do this for you. I want you to be happy.” She explained. I was still so scared..not for myself but for them. Death didn’t scare me anymore. He had shown me how hell was so I wasn’t scared of whatever he had to bring but the two maidens?
“I appreciate this kind act of yours. However, I cannot go with you. I cannot put you both in such great risk.” I explained to them, shaking my head vehemently. I could not let them get in trouble because of me.
“It is a risk we are willing to take.” Lady Anne responded. “The Alpha had placed us in charge of you. It is our responsibility to make sure you are fine so please, let us do this for you.” She pleaded.
“At this point, you are the one putting us at risk. While we still have the chance, let us run away! Let us escape!” The lady who served me tea pleaded. I stared at them both, fear evident in my eyes. Why was it so hard for them to understand? Why could they not understand that I didn’t want to put them at risk.
“I am sorry…. I can’t.” I sat on the bed again, staring at them both. “Please….leave before the Alpha comes in here. I do not want anything to get into trouble because of me.” I pleaded.
“Please, my lady. Now that you have the chance, let’s leave “ they urged.
“Alright then. “ I let out a sigh and we headed for the door but I was suddenly brought to an halt when the Alpha walked in. My eyes widened in shock and so did theirs. Was he aware of everything that was going on. Slowly, he looked at each and everyone of us and I hoped and prayed he would not find out what was going on.
“And…. Where are you all headed to?” He questioned, staring at us all.
“Downstairs…” I responded almost immediately. My voice was shaky and I hoped it wouldn’t give us away. “I wanted to do some laundry alongside the maids. I asked for their help.” I fidgeted . He was quiet as he stared at the maids and they nodded in response even though they had their heads bowed.
“Laundry?” He questioned, walking towards us and staring at me suspiciously. His grip on my neck suddenly caused my eyes to widen and a gasp escaped my lips. He smiled and let go of me before heading to the two other maids. My heart raced a gazillion times in just a second.
He chuckled as he stared at them and immediately, pulled their neck with the same force he did with mine.
“How dare you! How dare you lie to me!” He roared.
“Not at all, Alpha…”
“I wasn’t talking to you.” He responded.
“They did nothing wrong. I am to be punished and not them. They did nothing wrong. If you are going to punish anyone, it should be me.” I pleaded. I knew the implications of my actions but I cold not let innocent souls perish for my sake. It was my mistake and I should bear the brunt of my crime.
“Very well then.” He chuckled and released the maids before heading to the door. “Guards!” He yelled. Just like they had waited for his order, they trooped in in their numbers.
“Behead these traitors!” He ordered with the calmest voice I had ever heard him call out with. My eyes widened in terror.
“No!” I yelled.
I opened my eyes immediately and looked around. I was sweating profusely and my heart….. It was racing so hard like it would jump out of my chest. A sigh escaped my lips at the realization that it was all a dream. There was possibly no way I could put any of those maidens in trouble.
I was quite hungry hence I made up my mind to plead with the Alpha to show me mercy and give me something to eat even if it was the horses feed. I was starving so hard. Trudging myself further, I headed to the door.
“Please, let me out.” I placed a bang on the door. There was no response hence I continued to bang the door. Just then, I heard the lock shift. I took a few steps backwards, hoping to see someone come in but no one did hence I decided to try to open it and to my greatest surprise, it did. I pinched myself to be sure it wasn’t another dream and no, it wasn’t.
Slowly, I opened the door and took a step out.
“I am sorry but you cannot leave. You cannot go anywhere.” A guard spoke, his hand behind him. “Good evening, my lady.” He added. Had I slept so much? It was evening already?
“I just need to see the Alpha. I am not going too far. I want to plead with him.” I begged but he shook his head still, his face void of emotions.
“I cannot restrict your movement, my lady. It is however an instruction from the Alpha not to let you out of the room. Please, return to the room.” He pleaded.
“Please…. I need to speak to the Alpha. I am starving. I am dying. Help me.” I pleaded once again, with the hope that he would pity me.
“I wish I could but it is not in my place to grant you mercy. Only the Alpha can. I am very sorry but you have to return inside otherwise your life and that of the guard would be in danger. Please, do not let the Alpha get upset with us.” He pleaded and let out a sigh before going back in.
Was the lock being opened a trap then? I shrugged and sat on the bed. My stomach had begun to grumble. I was starving and I knew I had to do something about it. I rolled on the bed as I tried to sleep once again but I couldn’t. My stomach was empty and I was weak.
Why was I kept in such a beautiful and big room if the only point was to torture me? It was no different from a prison. Seconds rolled into minutes and minutes into hours yet there was nothing. I couldn’t stay in there anymore hence I would lose my life so I stood up and tried to device a plan. Leaving through the door was a no-no. Guards were stationed there and they wouldn’t let me leave.
I checked around suspiciously for an escape route in the room, perhaps, a secret passage or anything but unfortunately, there was none. The only escape route which was not much of an escape route was the window. It was so high and the chances of me being successful while coming down was quite low. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out a way to escape thought the window.
If I could find my way out of the room, locating the kitchen would not be difficult. For the umpteenth time, I let out a sigh before jumping out of the window. It was night time hence it was easier for me to escape. There were no guards whatsoever behind the window. Perhaps, the Alpha had believed I couldn’t escape from there.
As soon as I was able to jump down, I traced my way to the kitchen immediately. Finding the kitchen was not so difficult as the sweet scent of the meals made before filled my nostrils. My stomach grumbled even more and I became even more hungry. I ran into the kitchen quickly, checking everywhere possible as I could not hold back the hunger anymore.
Relief washed through me as I found the remnant of the food made that day. Like an hungry lion, I began to devour it, not caring bout the consequences of my actions that minute.
“A
thief? “ He scoffed. “You?”
My blood froze that minute. It was the Alpha… That was my end.
