Jason could have easily walked out of the Rotthorne's villa and out of this miserable marriage but how could he? His love for his wife have always held him back. His hope that one day, his love will be reciprocated by his wife had always tied him down.
And now that he has fully made up his mind to leave for good, he was shown a teeny tiny bit of hope which swayed his mind greatly.
If Catherine meant what she just promised him, then his marital life, his life in general, will take a new turn.
Catherine was not happy with the decision to let Jason work, but she just needed something to put her husband in check. Besides, she has not yet discussed it with her mother, Cherrie and her grandmother, Silvana. They both wouldn't take it likely with her. In fact she knows they are going to object to the decision of making Jason her Secretary.
"What else do you have to say about this, Miss Catherine?" One of the directors' question cut through her thoughts.
Catherine blinked back to her senses "Uhh well, yes, that would be all for now. Thank you" she said quickly, getting on her feet. Bowing slightly, she walked briskly out of the hall.
Grand Shells Globals, the third largest company in Bigfield County, was founded by Mrs Silvana Rotthorne, the eldest member of the Rotthornes family and Catherine's grandmother.
Catherine, being sharp and quick-witted, was appointed by her father, Shell Rotthorne, as Chairman of the board of directors at the age of nineteen. She has been doing splendidly well ever since. As she walked out of the board meeting room, looks of surprises plastered everyone's face but who dares voice out their displeased state?
Back in her office, Catherine picked up her bag and headed straight for home.
Her grandmother was already waiting for her in the livingroom "Catherine, can I have a word with you?" Silvana said at once, startling Catherine who didn't even realised there was someone seated on the sofa.
"Grandma, what brings you here?" she asked, surprised and displeased, but faking a smile.
Unknown to Catherine, Cherrie had eavesdropped on her conversation with Jason that morning and had immediately whispered a word of it to Silvana.
Grandma's visit only meant nothing but trouble, so why is she here? Catherine wondered.
Silvana cleared her throat stiffly and took a deep sigh without looking at Catherine.
"Sure, grandma" Catherine nodded calmly and made to seat but Silvana shook her head in the negative, making her straighten.
"Outside, in the garden" Silvana stood up and headed out while she followed closely.
On the lawn outside, grandma began to lash out at her "What are you doing, Cathy? I hope you have not allowed that good-for-nothing lousy husband of yours have his way with you?"
"What? what..no. No grandma. Never. I will never allow that, grandma" Catherine shuddered in response.
"Better" Silvana nodded quickly in satisfaction, seeing her tough granddaughter looking nervous and tensed.
"Then what nonsense have I heard about you offering him a job at the company, huh? We can't trust that low-life gold-digger" Silvana interrogated.
"Please grandma, you know I forced him to marry me, he didn't want any of this please, don't hurt him" Catherine fidgeted with her fingers.
"I know this very well. I will give you a million dollars. Divorce him Cathy" she said in a coldly shrill voice "You are no longer a small child, Cathy. No more excuses. You know what must be done" she added.
"I..I can't grandma, you know I love him. I can't think of another woman having him. I have to keep him by all means. Why can't you let me be with him? He has not wrong you in anyway. He is a nice guy" Catherine stated firmly but quietly.
"A million dollar for him too, if you love him that much. But make sure you divorce him, get rid of him, or I'll kill him" Silvana's voice turned threateningly cold and her face looked darker under the dimly lit garden now.
"You don't have to, grandma" Catherine objected in fright.
"Make him sign the papers or become a widow. The choice is yours now" Silvana said sternly, leaving her standing there motionlessly.
True, her grandmother, Silvana Rotthorne is one of the shrewd human to ever live. Her statesmanship, and stern personality worn her the company from her seventeen siblings. Over the years, she built the Company's foundation upon hard labour, first, then sweat and blood which ever comes first.
As she grew weaker, she had to bequeath the reins of the company to her son, who later put Catherine in charge.
Silvana Rotthorne is not one to make empty threats. If Catherine do not really want to end up a widow at such a young age, then she better have Jason sign those papers as instructed, but how could she?
Jason is the man for her and not only would she have him to herself for life, but she is determined to keep him no matter. He took her virginity afterall. Well, which isn't entirely his fault but he has to pay for it. She just couldn't let her feelings for him show, because of her family. To her, that's the best way to protect her husband.
Meanwhile in the bedroom, Jason was impatiently waiting for his wife to confirm her offer of a job for him.
As he waited, he got excited that at last Catherine and himself will have a good time tonight for the first time. If she is willing to consider offering him a job, isn't it a good opportunity to make her consider him in bed too? The thoughts warmed up Jason's body as he threw himself on the bed and curled up smiling, with blushes on his face.
"What do you think you are doing?" His wife's sharp and clearly irritated voice snapped him out of his riverie. He jumped out of bed.
"Will I really get to work as your secretary as you have said this morning?" He grabbed unto her hand, his eyes searching her large green eyes.
"I'm exhausted right now Jason. Make me coffee" she snatched her hand out of his, as Silvana's voice flashed through her head.
"You have to affirm it now, Catherine. And for how long do I get to stick to that goddamn couch. Can't we even sleep in each other's arm?" Jason wouldn't back down. He was bent on getting her soften up tonight. And then maybe, just maybe, they might get to be 'husband and wife' for real tonight.
Catherine put her bag down and gave him a look of daggers.
"Please, honey, even for once" Jason's voice tuned down hopelessly.
Catherine sighed "You will get a job. Now coffee please" she softened up a bit.
Jason's mouth curved into a hidden smile and he made for the kitchen to get his wife some coffee.
