My Successor

Ash “It’s time my love. We have to have Aura take over the clan. She is my successor after all.” I said to my wife Sage. “But … She is not 18 yet. Can’t we wait until after her birthday?” Sage complained. I knew she would she was never good with changing of her plans. “No. We have gotten word that there is going to be an attack on us by rogue werewolves. They will go after Aura if she is still just the heir to the clan.” I explained. “But her party. . . . .” “No Sage this is about the safety of Aura’s life and the clan as a whole. I have already talked to the other clan leaders. Some are heading out tonight to return to their homes. The rest that are staying are going to help and fight and are sending word to their clan’s members to send more people to help.” I said straight forward so she couldn’t fight me anymore. She looked worried and confused like she wanted to keep fighting but didn’t know where to start. “Please have Aura come up here right now so we can talk to her and let her know what is going on. Also my love, I am going to reach out to the werewolf pack closest to us and ask for a meeting to get in tell on any rogue attacks they have encountered recently.” I explained. I hated having to reach out to the wolves. I didn’t trust them and have sheltered Aura from them. They think they are better than anyone else. I need the in tell so I would have to suck up my pride for a single meeting. “Okay I will call her up right now” She said getting up and walking to the bathroom. With my heighten hearing I could hear her talking to Aura and telling her to get up here. Aura seemed annoyed with being dragged away from whatever she was currently doing. I had moved to the sitting area in my room. I was now sitting on the couch waiting for my wife to come out of the bathroom and for my daughter to come in. While I was waiting I was texting Slasher my top warrior for updates. He was currently on the lookout of all the boards to the mountains. I had to be careful and have enough time so we were not taken by surprise and actually had the advantage in the battle to come. I heard a knock on my bedroom door. Then it was pushed open. Aura stormed through the door with the guy she had been spending time with. I couldn’t remember his name nor did I wish to know it right now. “If this is about the list for the birthday party I just sent it to mom and few minutes ago.” She started off the conversation. “Sweetheart please sit. We are actually not going to be throwing a party this year for you.” I started while patting the couch spot next to me. She moved to one of the chairs across from me and her friend sat in the chair next to her. “Does mom know this? Why? What is going on?” She questioned with a confused expression on her face. “Yes your mother knows I have already told her just a few minutes before she called you up here. You are going to be taking over the clan. Tomorrow night is a full moon. We can pass the clan to you then.” I started bluntly. I couldn’t sugarcoat it from her. She had a right to know it all. “Why? I thought I had much more time before I took over. You guys wanted me mated remember.” She said still confused written all over her face as well as shock. “Well we have gotten word that there will be a rogue werewolf attack on us. You will be safe as long as you are the leader of the clan versus just being my successor. You will have to pick a mate another time. The other clan leaders already know what is going on. Some are leaving tonight to return home. The rest that are staying are going to help and fight. I am also setting up a meeting with the closest pack to us for information they may have on rogue attacks recently. You will be the leader of the clan by the time the meeting takes place. Do you understand what I am saying?” I told her as quickly as possible just ripping off the band aid. We still had a lot to do before the ceremony tomorrow night. “Yes father I understand. What can I do to help?” She said with confidence rather than fear. I was proud to see her like this. She is going to make a great leader. My wife came out of the bathroom. Her eyes were all swollen and red like she had been crying. She must’ve been thinking the worst is going to happen. “Oh my love What is wrong? Why are you crying?” I asked standing up and hugging her tightly. Trying to comfort her. “She won’t be a child anymore. She will be a leader. She will have responsibilities. I can’t protect her anymore from the outside world. No I am not saying she will be bad or that she not ready. I just wish we had more time. She is just 17 turning 18 in a few days. She is my baby girl.” She said with tears streaming down her face. “Oh my love she will always be our baby but this is what she has been training for her whole life remember that.” I gave her another tight hug and kissed her forehead. I had my worries to this was something no parent wished to go through put their child on the front line to try and keep them safe. I hated that I didn’t know how this was going to all play out. I looked over at the boy sitting there next to Aura. “You may want to go find your father and see if you are leaving or staying.” I said to him. “I don’t need to know if my father is staying. I am staying no matter what. I will help Aura whatever she needs I am here.” He said moving his hand to her knee and squeezing lightly. I nodded in agreement. This was going to be a battle and all the help was welcome.
