“How?” I asked coldly.
Was our security system so weak that witches could simply waltz in as they wished?
“We don’t know.... although we suspect they must’ve had inside knowledge, someone guiding them through the blind spots, but that’s not all.” Kai’s voice wavered slightly, as if uncertain whether to go on.
“ The witches… they weren’t fighting to kill..... they were trying to reach something, or someone.”
My brows furrowed.
“What do you mean?”
“They were searching for a specific room, the one beneath the west fall," he said, hesitating again before he continued
“ Unfortunately, they escaped but....one of them was caught.”
I turned to him sharply.
“A witch" I seethed but he shook his head
His lips parted, but no sound came for a moment. Then,
“No. Not exactly,” he said
The silence that followed stretched long enough to feel like a thread tightening around my neck.
“Then what?” I asked impatiently
Kai swallowed. “A hybrid.”
The word struck something deep inside me, my hands clenched until my knuckles whitened.
“A what?”
“A hybrid,” he repeated. “Half witch, half wolf.”
I stared at him for several long seconds, the echo of the word vibrating through my mind.
A witch… and a wolf?.
Two races that should never mix, one born of the moon, the other of forbidden craft, was that even possible?
A laugh, sharp and devoid of any humor, slipped past my lips.
"You expect me to believe that fairytales are walking into my packhouse now?”
“It’s not a fairytale, Lucian,” Kai said quietly.
"I've seen her myself, she was brought in alive.”
My laughter died instantly, and the words sank in like ice water.
Alive?
That meant I could see her for myself.
I stood and began to move toward the door, each step slow and heavy, the lingering ache in my limbs screamed for me to stop, go back, and rest, but I didn’t care. I needed to see what kind of creature dared breach my walls.
Kai followed me anxiously.
“Lucian, at least wait...."
“Get out of my way Kai,”
I growled again, the air cracked faintly around me as my control wavered, my beast didn’t like being confined, nor commanded, it never did.
Kai sighed but didn’t try to stop me again. He knew better than to try.
The corridors of the Thornblade packhouse stretched long and wide. Every few steps, a guard bowed as I passed, their heads lowered.
My steps echoed against the stone floor, a steady rhythm that mirrored the fury building inside my chest.
A hybrid.
A witch.
A trespasser.
By the time I reached the lower levels of the manor, the dungeons stood not too far, the air was damp, heavy with decay, and the metallic smell of old blood. It clung to the walls, thick enough to taste.
The guards standing by the entrance stiffened at the unexpected sight of me.
“Alpha...." one began, but I silenced him with a glance. Without another word, they stepped aside, unlocking the heavy iron door.
As I walked in, my boots splashed through shallow puddles that had gathered from the leaking pipes above, somewhere deeper in the dark, something scurried across, rats, probably, i paid no mind as I continued further, and soon, I heard something.
The faintest sound of a low whine.
It came from the last cell at the end of the corridor.
I approached slowly, my pulse steady, my expression unreadable. The guard standing beside the door bowed hastily.
“Leave" I commanded and without hesitation, he scurried off.
I glanced through the bars.
At first, I saw nothing but a shape, curled in on itself, small and trembling, but looking closer, the outline sharpened.
A wolf, which when compared to mine, was too small for average, although to my greatest surprise, it wasn't just an ordinary wolf. Even beneath the dirt and blood, its coat shimmered faintly of pure white.
My eyes narrowed.
A white wolf was rare enough to be called a legend.
It was rumored to carry the essence of the moon goddess herself, and yet here it was, locked in my dungeon, barely clinging to life.
Pathetic.
Auroras POV
Cold.
That was the first thing I felt, not the faint chill of air, but the kind that seeped deep into the bones, biting cruelly.
My eyes fluttered open to darkness and for a moment, I thought I had gone blind, but then, as my vision adjusted, I caught sight of faint sunlight, seeping through a tiny window, high up on the stone wall. It wasn’t much, just enough to outline the miserable hole I was trapped in.
The place reeked of rot and damp soil, the stench of dead rats mixed with rust and blood clouded the air.
I wasn’t sure how long I’d been out. Minutes? Hours? Maybe a day. Time didn’t feel real here
I tried to lift my head, but my muscles refused. My body trembled violently before collapsing against the cold ground again, sharp pain jolted through me, and I tried to yell but soon realized I had not shifted yet
I was still in my wolf form.
It was stained with the color of blood.
My blood.
I was wounded and it hurt so bad.
The dirt beneath me was wet, clinging to my fur, and the faint sound of dripping water echoed somewhere in the distance. Every breath I took burned my lungs, every attempt to move sent sharp waves of pain across my body.
My wolf wined when it tried to stand but fell right back, weakness pressing its weight on me.
My head hurt, with thoughts that ravaged my mind, the fire, the fight, Colt’s voice shouting my name. The way everything had gone wrong in a heartbeat.
The witches had seen me.
Colt had seen me
They’d all seen when I shifted.
My thoughts were jumbled, wondering what they'd think of me.
Would they hate me now knowing what I was, would they hate my father for knowing and still keeping it from them?
I swallowed hard, blinking back the tears that stung my eyes. My throat burned as I tried to shift back, but I couldn’t. My wolf whimpered inside me, weak and broken, and I realized just how drained I was. I couldn’t even find the strength to call my magic, it was like the aura inside me had been completely dimmed.
The pain was unbearable, but the shame… that hurt more, thinking about my mother, this had been the second time I'd had the chance to save her yet I failed again.
Why was life being so cruel
Why did the universe keep mocking me like this? Every time I came close, it tore everything away.
A faint whine escaped my throat, soft and pitiful, I pressed my face back into the dirt, trying to block out the thoughts yet, not long after, my ears perked up at the faint sound of footsteps, small at first but soon began to pick up.
Someone was coming
