The private elevator ride back up to the penthouse felt like a descent into an alternate dimension. Neither of them spoke. The air inside the cabin was thick with unspoken tension, the kind that preceded a violent storm. As the glass doors slid open, Elara didn't wait for him. She marched straight out toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, her heels clicking sharply against the polished concrete. ​"You like to think you've won total control," Elara said, spinning around to face him as Alex calmly shrugged off his suit jacket and tossed it over the back of a leather armchair. "You manipulated the press conference, you forced my hand, and you turned my family's legacy into your personal public relations stunt." ​Alex poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal tumbler, his movements unhurried and maddeningly composed. He took a slow sip before lifting his gaze to meet hers. ​"Control isn't about forcing people to obey, Elara," Alex replied, his voice dangerously smooth. "It's about aligning their survival with your desires. You wanted your architectural firm back. I wanted absolute market dominance. We achieved both. The only thing bruised right now is your pride." ​"My pride?" Elara closed the distance between them, her eyes flashing with pure rage. "You stripped away my autonomy and turned me into an accessory to your corporate empire!" ​In a flash of motion, Alex set the glass down with a sharp clink and stepped into her space. Before she could retreat, his hands gripped her waist, lifting her slightly as he backed her up against the cold glass of the window, trapping her between his solid frame and the sprawling lights of the city below. ​"An accessory?" Alex murmured, his face inches from hers, his dark eyes burning into her soul. "Look outside, Elara. Every light down there belongs to someone who wants to tear us apart. If you think for one second I'd let anyone else share this throne with me, you're gravely mistaken." ​Her breath hitched, the raw intensity in his voice short-circuiting every defensive thought in her head. For a heartbeat, the anger blurred into a terrifying, magnetic pull that threatened to swallow them both whole
