Ma turned and looked at me. “Show time.” I squinted at her. “Why are you smiling?” She shrugged. “This is fun.” “Really?” Dad said. “Really?” I echoed. She reached behind the chair and patted my knee. “When’s the last time we did anything together as a family that didn’t involve a holiday meal?” I squinted at her some more as I thought it over. “The zoo?” She slapped my knee this time. “You were twelve.” I opened the door and hopped out. Chompers looked over but otherwise stayed put. Smart dog. “Maybe we can go there then, when this is all over.” Dad got out next. “Uh huh. Good luck with that.” Ma exited last before we all headed to the steps of the church. We divided and conquered from there. Dad went in, Ma to the left, me to the right. I nodded graciously at people and smiled
