THREAD OF FATE
CHAPTER 31
At the Williams' residence, the doorbell rang, signaling the arrival of the Travis family. Mrs. Williams hastened to answer the door, her face beaming with a warm smile. As she welcomed the guests, she called out to her family members, summoning them to join the gathering.
Everyone assembled in the living room, exchanging pleasantries and warm greetings. Mrs. Williams suggested they proceed to the dining table, where a sumptuous meal awaited them. As they sat down, Benita's stunning beauty captivated the attention of all, particularly Tylor, who seemed oblivious to her charms.
Benita, resplendent in her elegant dress, attempted to engage Tylor in conversation. However, he remained distant, his mind preoccupied with thoughts of Liza. Benita's subtle cough finally caught Tylor's attention, and he looked up, their eyes meeting for a brief moment. Tylor politely offered her a glass of water, and Benita smiled graciously, thanking him.
Mr. Williams, eager to facilitate a connection between Tylor and Benita, boasted about his son's accomplishments, hinting at a potential union between the two families. The room filled with polite laughter, except for Tylor and his grandmother, who remained stoic.
As the meal progressed, Tylor's grandmother excused herself, retiring to her room. Tylor seized the opportunity to address Benita directly. "Miss Benita, you're indeed a beautiful woman," he began, his voice firm but polite. "However, I must inform you that I'm not interested in pursuing a relationship with you. My heart belongs to someone else, and I apologize if this causes any disappointment."
Benita's face fell, her smile faltering. Tylor continued, his words laced with empathy, "I hope you find someone who loves and appreciates you for who you are. Please know that my decision has nothing to do with your worth as a person."
Tylor's words hung in the air, and before anyone could respond, he stood up and excused himself, leaving the dining table in an uncomfortable silence. Benita's anger and disappointment were palpable, and her parents exchanged worried glances.
Mr. Travis addressed Mr. Williams, his voice tinged with indignation. "I thought you assured us that Tylor was aware of and agreeable to this arrangement. Why would he humiliate my family in such a manner?" Mr. Williams apologized profusely, attributing Tylor's behavior to the whims of the younger generation.
Daniella, Tylor's sister, chimed in, her voice laced with mischief. "I'd advise you to look elsewhere for a suitor, Benita. My brother won't change his mind." Mrs. Williams hastily intervened, asking Daniella to refrain from further comment and retire to her room. Daniella obeyed, flashing a knowing smile as she exited.
As the uncomfortable atmosphere lingered, Mrs. Williams apologized once more to the Travis family. The visitors, sensing the futility of their endeavor, took their leave, departing the Williams' residence in an awkward silence.
Once the Travis family had departed, Mr. Williams summoned Tylor, his face stern with displeasure. Tylor appeared, his eyes flashing with defiance. Mr. Williams' anger boiled over, and he slapped Tylor, the sound echoing through the hallway.
Mrs. Williams gasped in shock, while Tylor's grandmother burst out of her room, her face etched with concern. "Cole, why would you strike my grandson?" she demanded, her voice firm. "I warned you to leave him alone. He's made his position clear, and we must respect his decision." As the argument escalated, Tylor stormed off to his room, his anger and frustration simmering. Mrs. Williams confronted her husband, her voice laced with dismay. "You shouldn't have slapped him, Cole. We need to make him understand the importance of this union, not provoke him further."
Tylor reappeared, his face set in a determined expression. Without a word, he strode past his parents and exited the house, the door slamming shut behind him. Mrs. Williams turned to her husband, her eyes filled with worry. "See what your actions have caused, Cole? This is why I always caution you to approach Tylor with calmness."
As the tension lingered, Mrs. Williams retreated to her room.
