ROMAN The Vargulf territory reflects the loneliness of the Vargulfs. Hidden in the heart of the forest and is always the misunderstood ones, we have no one else to blame for the gloomy and the sad days. None visits the Vargulf. It is believed to be doomed and cursed. And I’m the prince of the damned. “You called for me, my prince?” Benjur, a troll, came inside my private quarters. I called him earlier for a special question. Something I know he can be of assistance with. He can give me the answer to this, I’m quite certain. “Yes.” I turned to look at him. His small stature’s only at least two feet. He looked up at me with eyes the size of tennis balls and wrinkly skin. Long, dry and spiky hair rose above its head. “This is something that should only be between you and me.” The troll nodded. “You shall not mention this to anyone. Especially to the king. This is very serious. If he knows, he might even not consider me as the next king.” That’s actually possible. My father’s not like the others who prioritizes their family before their duty. To him, duty comes first because the family will always understand. It won’t be in a different order. Always duty first, family comes after. “You can trust me, my prince.” The troll raised its right hand to swear. I nodded. Benjur has been one of the most faithful trolls in the Vargulf. I have no issues with his loyalty since then. He has been the most loyal among the rest of their kind. “Lock the door first. I can’t risk anyone listening to this.” The small troll marched towards the door. Because of its height, he pulled a chair from the side of the room and climbed to reach the latch. Slowly, the door was locked. Benjur came back and stood in the same place. He was panting. “The door is locked. my prince.” I cleared my throat. This is the reason why I felt uneasy the whole day. I kept thinking about last night. About that she-wolf. I’m sure about it. I felt it. It didn’t feel like the others before. I’m certain that the scent she had, the electricity that crossed between our palms, that cannot be denied. It’s not only a simple thing but a rare one. It felt like I have met my mate. “I have a special mission for you… but before that I have to ask you something.” Benjur gulped. “Anything, my prince. Anything I know of.” Exactly. “What do you know about the Lycans of the Glasswoods?” The question seemed to be a bullet shot to his heart. The poor elf’s eyes dilated some more as he gulped. He looked around in instant panic, checking if there’s someone else in the room who must have heard it. I frowned. I feel like he’s only making a huge deal of this when it doesn’t have to be one. “My prince! Please don’t say something about the-“ “I need to find someone from the Glasswoods. I met her last night and as impossible as it may seem, I’m sure she’s my missing mate.” “My prince, please! Say no more!” He covered his ears with his hands. As if that would stop me from speaking these things. Benjur’s panicked rose some more upon my mention of a girl and mate from the rival pack. I gave him a moment. After all, I cannot blame him. The Lycans of the Glasswoods were the reason why the Vargulfs were viewed to be the villains of the wolf world. It is the Vargulfs that were exiled from the main land of the werewolves because of their enmity with the Lycans. “You shall not mention the enemy, my prince! Ooooh… if the king hears one word from you about them, he will be enraged!” I smirked. I know that. “That’s why I chose you for this job. You’re the most reliable and smartest troll in the whole of Vargulf. You will not betray me, will you?” Benjur paused from panicking and listened to what I just said. “I’m the most reliable and the smartest troll in Vargulf?” His eyes were welling with tears. I’m sure he’s flattered and overwhelmed. “Yes, you are. That’s why I know you can do my request.” The troll suddenly got excited. I took that as a yes and explained to him in intricate details the kind of task I needed him to do. I described the she-wolf I saw the night before. I told him the name of the girl is Lila. A beautiful name for a very beautiful woman. I couldn’t stop talking about her. The innocence in her eyes that made me want to protect her, her rosy and soft lips, her pale skin and the sound of her voice. “Lila… got it, my prince.” “Thank you, Benjur.” He gave me a bow before getting out of my quarters. I watched as he struggled to open the lock of the door. Shaking my head, I helped him with the lock. “Thank you, my prince.” “Do not forget to update me on everything. Make this as soon as you can. You have the resources and the magic to complete this task in the shortest time.” And then I locked the door. Finally, solitude. The thing about Benjur is that he’s the kind of elf that has wide knowledge with dark magic. He has witch’s blood on him. He can shapeshift, concoct potions and even hypnotize people if needs be. Given those skills, I know he’ll give me what I need in due time. No doubt, he can give that to me. Soon, the woman from last night would be found. I laid down again on my bed. My eyes have wandered on the painting at the wall. It was a painting of my Dad’s of our little family. Being the leaders of the Starfall pack, it is my fate that one day I’ll be the king. I cannot escape that. In order to be the best king and decide on what’s going to be the best for the kingdom, I must have the best queen for me. Last night, I found her. I will not rest until she is my mate.
