Selene's POV
The clan bases in this world are imposing structures that dominate the landscape. These skyscrapers, with 100 floors or more, serve as both strongholds and homes for the thousands of people trapped here. For many of us, these bases have become our entire world. They're where we live and socialize, and they provide a sense of security and belonging in an otherwise harsh environment. They're where we form connections, build relationships, and find support. And for those of us who have been here for a long time, they've become home – a place where we can feel safe, at least for a little while. The bases are also symbols of clan power and influence, reflecting the strength and resilience of their members.
Mystery Number 13: The Good Stuff
The 85th floor phenomenon is a fascinating mystery. Every month, without fail, a bounty of essential supplies appears at the center of the empty floor. It's as if the world is providing for us, dropping off necessities like food, clothing, and medical supplies, as well as an assortment of weapons and ammunition.
Theories abound about the origin of these supplies. Some believe it's a benevolent force, a gift from the gods, or a higher power. Others think it's a reward for our resilience and bravery in the face of adversity. Whatever the reason, the result is the same: a welcome influx of resources that helps us survive and thrive.
The predictability of this event has become a beacon of hope for many. People look forward to it every month, and it's a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there's always something to be grateful for.
The leader's role in dividing the supplies is crucial to the clan's survival. By allocating resources based on individual needs and keeping a reserve for emergencies, they ensure that everyone has what they need to survive and thrive. The system seems fair and efficient, with each member receiving a monthly share of essentials. His foresight in stockpiling extra weapons, grenades, and bullets is a testament to their preparedness and responsibility. It's reassuring to know that the clan has a plan in place to defend itself against potential threats.
The mention of a swarm of monsters is ominous, and it's clear that it's a scenario everyone hopes to avoid. The idea of thousands of monsters attacking the base is daunting, and the varying duration from 5 hours to days of such events only adds to the uncertainty.
The setup of explosives serves as the siren system on the top floor of the nearby building and is a clever move, providing an early warning system in case of a swarm. The restriction on access to that area makes sense, given the importance of the lookouts and the potential risks involved.
Reflecting on the circumstances of my arrival in this world, it's indeed fortunate that I appeared in the safe zone during a swarm. It would have been disastrous if I had appeared in the red zone - outside a base. I'm grateful for the protection and support the clan has provided, and I'm aware of the importance of being prepared for any situation that may arise.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Gabriel's reaction was priceless when I took down the monster sneaking up behind him. He looked genuinely surprised, and I'm sure he didn't even see it coming. It was a close call, and I'm glad I was able to react quickly and take care of the threat.
It's moments like these that remind me of the importance of having each other's backs in this world. Gabriel's skills are impressive, but even the best can use a little help sometimes. I'm just glad I kept him safe.
Then a loud explosion happened. This can only mean one thing: a swarm of monsters is heading towards our building. The siren system has been triggered, and it's a signal for us to prepare for battle. This is exactly the kind of situation we've been preparing for, and I know that Gabriel and I, along with the rest of the clan, will need to work together to defend our home.
The sound of the explosion echoes through the area, and I can feel the tension building up. It's time to gear up and get ready to face whatever is coming our way. I looked over at Gabriel, and I knew he was already in fight mode. But I am freakin' tired.
The timing couldn't be worse. I'm exhausted from the long patrol and the excitement of reaching my kill count goal. The last thing I want to do is gear up and face a swarm of monsters. My legs ache, and my mind is numb from the fatigue.
"Selene, let's run back to base. Quick!" He shouted because the explosion was so loud that we felt a ringing in our ears.
The chaos is unfolding rapidly. Gabriel and I are sprinting towards the entrance, and I can see our fellow clanmates rushing to get into position.
Then a second explosion takes place. It is a clear indication that this swarm is going to be intense, with multiple swarm points. I was momentarily disoriented, but Gabriel's quick reflexes saved me. He shielded me with his body, and I'm grateful for his protection. As I regain my bearings, he signs to check if I'm okay, and I'm relieved to see that the elevators have arrived with more reinforcements.
"We brought extra weapons and bullets!" one of the best guys in our clan, named Rick, a 33-year-old big guy from Hawaii, shouted, and he was already charging into battle.
"Selene, listen! I know you're worn out. Head back inside and stay on the medical floor. Rest a little bit and rejoin the battle. You can't use the elevator for now because it's loaded, so use the stairs in the meantime and just check every floor if the elevator will be free. I'll stay behind and help them. Now GO!"
Gabriel's instructions to me are clear. I'm not thrilled about running up the stairs, especially given my fatigue from the afternoon's activities. But I know I have to trust Gabriel's judgment and follow his orders.
What strikes me, though, is Gabriel's decision to stay behind and help the others. Despite being more tired than I, he's putting the needs of the clan ahead of his own desire for kill counts. It's a selfless act, and for the first time, I'm genuinely worried about his safety.
I'll have to move quickly and hope that I can find another way to contribute to the battle. But my mind is still with Gabriel, and I can only hope that he'll be okay.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
The memories of that night still linger, and it's painful to recall the sheer scale of destruction and loss. The swarm was relentless, lasting for hours on end, with barely any respite. It was a non-stop swarm from 6 PM to 2 AM, then continued right after the 38-minute break until the next day. The clan members fought valiantly, but the toll was devastating – almost half of us were lost. The aftermath of that night still feels surreal. The losses we suffered were staggering, and it's taken a month for us to begin rebuilding and coming to terms with what happened. The memories of that night will stay with me forever, a grim reminder of the dangers we face in this world.
I remember the exhaustion and adrenaline-fueled chaos as we fought to defend our base. Even our leader, who usually stays out of the fray, joined the battle. I was thrust into the action shortly after reaching the 80th floor, with only a brief hour of rest. It's a miracle we managed to hold out.
Today is far more normal than that. I am at the top of the mechanical penthouse here on the rooftop. The peaceful atmosphere is a welcome respite, and I find solace in the distant sounds of gunfire and explosions. At first, those noises would have been alarming, but after the intense fight two months ago, they've become a familiar and reassuring soundtrack.
The timing feels eerily familiar. The swarm started around this time, and I'm on high alert, even if the atmosphere seems peaceful for now. As the darkness gathers, I'll hold onto that feeling of safety and solidarity. Appreciating the relative calm. The wind carries a gentle breeze, and I'm letting the moment wash over me. There's something comforting about knowing that others are out there fighting for our safety and are willing to put themselves in harm's way to defend us, to protect us. The sounds of battle have become a strange kind of melody to my ear, one that reminds me that I'm not alone in this world.
"Hey!"
I quickly looked back and there he was. Gabriel. Was this a dream?
Gabriel and I may have survived that fight, but not our friendship. If only I could go back to that very night, I wouldn't have crossed the line he established. Especially after what Cat told me a while ago. The barrier that was built at this time between the two of us must remain. But why is he here now?
