Gabriel's POV
Mr. Watanabe's reputation as a respected leader among the clans was well-deserved. He is commonly referred to as "MG," an abbreviation for "Major General," a title he held before becoming trapped in this world. His past lent credibility to his strategic thinking and leadership skills. Despite the extraordinary circumstances of being trapped in this world, he has adapted remarkably well, maintaining his physical strength and mental sharpness.
The fact that he had spent nearly 15 years in this world, yet still possessed the vitality and vigor of someone much younger, spoke to his resilience and determination. His experience and wisdom had likely earned him the trust and admiration of the other clans, making him a unifying figure in this unusual world.
The swarm's impact was still fresh in our minds, a traumatic event that claimed many lives and left deep scars. For MG, it seemed to have triggered a re-evaluation of his priorities and perhaps even a sense of mortality. His decision to fix his count at 10 was an impressive gesture, hinting that he was ready to let go and move on.
The party was a fitting tribute to his leadership and the sacrifices he had made for the clan. It was also a celebration of the bonds we had formed in this strange world, and a way to honor the memories of those we had lost. The gathering would be a chance for us to come together, share stories, and express our gratitude for MG's guidance and kindness.
In a world where life was precarious and death lurked around every corner, the party was a defiant affirmation of our existence and the connections we had forged. It was a moment to cherish the time we had and to acknowledge the people who had made a difference in our lives.
The gathering that was about to unfold was nothing like the parties we are accustomed to, for this world offers us little. Yet, as humans, we have an innate desire to craft beauty from nothing. Some of our talented friends wielded flaming steel to create rhythms and a fire show. People danced to the beats, while others sang enchanting songs. And that is how we party in this world.
Selene was now occupied with the task of preparing our meal, or more accurately, ensuring its proper division. We're aware that it consisted solely of biscuits, yet they possessed a unique taste and flavor that endeared them to us.
What occurred between Selene and me in the elevator earlier was everything my heart had desired. When she returned my kiss, I felt complete. I was certain it was what she wanted as well. Therefore, I was slightly bewildered when she abruptly pulled back and gently pushed me.
Noticing my apparent shock, she shared what Cat had told her this morning—that MG intended to pass the leadership role to me. It would be sudden, leaving me no choice in the matter. A subtle ache arose in my chest when Selene asked me to agree and accept the leadership. She also requested that I feign surprise, like I would be hearing it for the first time, when MG addressed me later.
After hearing everything, I realized this could turn into a major issue for both of us. I told her that I wasn’t going to give up on her without a fight. If the best way forward is to keep our relationship hidden from everyone, then so be it—we’ll keep it a secret.
We're still to talk and sort things out for ourselves later on the rooftop. We don't want to keep hiding or denying the obvious feelings we have for each other. That kiss, the day I almost vanished, and the one we just shared a while ago, was something strong. And we both felt it deeply. We gave in to that moment because we truly wanted each other. I'll do everything I can to protect her, make her feel secure, and earn her trust even more. No matter what happens, I’ll stay by her side.
For the first time, after all the s**t I've been through in my life, I want to love and be loved again. I’m ready for something positive to happen while we’re stuck in this place.
Then I snapped out of my thoughts as the room erupted with everyone chanting, "Speech! Speech! Speech! Speech!" They all chanted in sync.
"Hush now, my children," MG commanded in a firm and resonant tone.
He treats us all like his children since he is the eldest in the clan. If he were to leave, the next oldest person would be only 35 years old. That’s a huge gap considering he’s already 64. That's his real age before being trapped here. And he has spent 15 years in this world. There are plenty of other elders from different clans, especially from the one I used to belong to. But that clan wasn’t the right fit for me. I needed a group that prioritized kills. And when I heard about MG’s Clan, which even had requirements to join, I didn’t hesitate. I set off on a five-day journey just to reach this base. I’ve never regretted it—it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
"Even in my absence, always remember that each one of you possesses incredible strength, not just physical but emotional as well. There may be times when you will feel isolated, but do not let that deter you. This clan is your family, and together you are stronger. Although we all have our differences and occasional disagreements, it is always crucial to treat one another with respect. Adhere to the rules set by your leader, and I am confident that you will thrive with his guidance. Before we proceed later for my final 10 kills, I will announce the next leader for this clan." MG continued.
Everyone clapped their hands, and one by one, they moved forward to hug him. It was their final farewell. Our final goodbye to our father here. Our clan's total members are now 32, including him. We’ve lost 28 cherished ones—friends, though more like family—to the last swarm. And just this month alone, three more have disappeared, taken by whatever cruel forces this world holds.
After the majority of the clan members, primarily the women, bid their farewells, we indulged in eating a substantial amount of biscuits. The reduced number of people resulted in an abundance of food for us to enjoy.
The gathering continued with singing and heartfelt speeches in memory of the ones we had lost. Many of the women struggled to hold their tears, and even some of the men were visibly moved. A profound silence then enveloped the room, only to be broken when Cat suddenly exclaimed.
"I'm asking Selene to sing. Come here, quickly!" Cat called out loudly, urging Selene to step into the center.
Selene sat near the table with biscuits and bottled water. Her presence was calm and quiet. Suddenly, curiosity swept over me. Sitting in the back corner, across from her, I realized I had never heard her sing before. Compelled by this thought, I stood and moved closer to the center of the room. There she was, standing shyly, radiating a quiet charm. My eyes locked on her beautiful face, and for a moment, it was as if no one else existed in the room. Then, she started to sing.
"🎵Do you remember when we'd sit out after dark?
Watching the fireflies and shooting stars aglow
Or all of the promises I made when you stayed closed.
And do you remember that you turned my heart to stone?..."
I believe it is now undeniable that I have fallen deeply in love with her, as my heart openly confesses this truth.
