Chapter 12: Cheers To Major General Watanabe!

Gabriel's POV "Gabriel, may I have a word with you?" The sudden tap on my shoulder made me turn around, and MG's serious expression hinted that the conversation was indeed going to be about something significant. I'm sure MG wanted to discuss the leadership position Selene had mentioned earlier, as well as the conditions that came with it. He had sought me out, specifically suggested that he saw something in me that he believed could be valuable to the clan, and I was curious to hear his thoughts. "What is it, MG? You scared the life out of me," I said, feigning surprise as though I hadn't been anticipating his arrival. "That's an intense look you have there for Selene. However, I must ask you to set aside whatever you are experiencing at this moment, young man," he stated. I understand what he's trying to imply, but I just pretended like I didn't get it. As Selene finished her performance, the audience's enthusiastic applause, cheers, and whistles filled the room, a testament to her talent. As the applause began to die down, another performer took the stage, smoothly transitioning into their own set. The show continued, each act bringing its own unique flair to the performance, keeping the audience engaged and entertained. "I am appointing you as the next leader of this clan, Gabe. Before you respond, allow me to explain my reasoning. You possess the ideal qualities for the role. You possess exceptional skills, extensive real-world experience, and a deep understanding of clan dynamics. This is the fourth clan you have been a part of, correct? With the knowledge and insights you have gained from your previous clans, you are well-equipped to protect and guide this one. Furthermore, you demonstrate natural leadership abilities and the capacity to put personal matters aside." He stated. "I must admit, MG, I am genuinely honored and thrilled to receive high praise from you. However, I had anticipated that you might select Rick instead, as he possesses commendable qualities as well," I responded. "But he is currently in a relationship with Cat. Leaders have established a rule stating that only a strong, independent individual is qualified to lead. Avoiding attachments from the opposite s*x makes the role more manageable. The clan's members are low at this time. Among the candidates, only you and Rick have met the qualifications. I have already spoken to Rick, and he made it clear that he is unwilling to sacrifice his relationship with Cat for the position I am about to offer. Therefore, the position falls to you," MG stated. "Yes, the position is yours! Congratulations!" Rick exclaimed as he appeared unexpectedly and pulled me into a hug. He was a figure, his muscular build reminiscent of a nightclub bouncer, yet that wasn't his actual profession. In reality, Rick had served in the Marines. "What are you doing? Let go of me," I said sharply, my tone laced with irritation as I struggled to free myself from his embrace. "All due respect, MG. What if I said no?" I turned to face MG, the weight of the decision pressing heavily on me. The condition of giving up romantic relationships emerged largely in my thoughts. My growing feelings for Selene made the idea of such a sacrifice more daunting. Leadership seemed to demand an immense price, one I'm uncertain if I was prepared to pay. "Then this clan of ours will fall apart. My next announcement would instruct everyone to seek a new clan, rather than declaring you as the next leader. So, what is your decision? Let me make this clear, Gabriel—I am not asking you; I am telling you to take on the role as the new leader. That is what I am about to announce. The time to descend is near. Be the soldier you have always been, my son," MG stated with utmost seriousness. I felt a void within me. What course of action would Selene and I take? Then, the final words spoken by MG resonated in my mind: 'Be the soldier you already are.' It is a profound responsibility, and I cannot jeopardize the safety of our clan that he entrusted to me. I cannot allow this clan to collapse. This is why Selene urged me to accept the role. This clan holds a special place in her heart. I cannot bear to see her lose it. A sharp pain pierced my chest, but I knew this was what I had to do. "Understood, Sir. The clan is secure with me. You need not worry any further. I will carry out all my responsibilities diligently," I stated to reassure MG. "That's my man!" Rick clasps my hands and lightly bumps his shoulder against mine. "Thanks, my son. I can now depart in peace. I sincerely hope that the other side is our true reality. If given the opportunity in my twilight years, I wish to reunite with all of you," MG said. "Everyone!" Rick exclaims, striking the table near us with his hands to command attention. "Please take your water bottles as we prepare to make a toast; the moment to descend is nearly upon us." "My children, it has been my greatest pleasure to serve you throughout these years. You granted me the finest adventure life could bestow. Continue to strive for greatness. With your new leader, you shall all endure any challenge together!" MG declared as he slowly walked toward the center. "Cheers to MG!" Rick exclaimed as he raised his bottle of water. "Cheers!" We all exclaimed as we raised our bottles and drank our water. MG stepped into the center and proclaimed, "With a serene heart, I am honored to announce the new leader of the clan. Gabriel! Come forward, my son!" The crowd erupted into enthusiastic cheers and applause. As I stood at the center alongside MG, he embraced me firmly, and it was witnessed by everyone present. "It is your call now, Lead," MG murmured softly into my ear. "Prepare your weapons, everyone! Let's proceed downstairs and initiate the countdown for MG," I commanded. We entered the elevators, armed and prepared. After a brief wait, we ensured that everyone gathered on the first floor, just outside, near the main entrance. After leading the group, I immediately spotted a monster and promptly aimed for its feet, delivering a decisive shot. MG shot its eye, prompting everyone to shout, "9 to go." Rick followed suit, achieving the same result, and the group enthusiastically yelled, "8 to go." The opportunity was then extended to other members, continuing the sequence until the count reached "2." The silence settled heavily, reflecting the fact that no monsters were appearing. "I do not believe this world wishes for your departure, Daddy MG," Cat remarked playfully. "You are mistaken," MG, firing his g*n and striking a monster 50 meters away from us. "One more kill and I'm off to go," he shouted to himself, laughing with joy and satisfaction in his heart. "Thank you and farewell, MG," Selene said from the opposite side, away from MG's recent target. She released her arrow with precision, striking the monster squarely in the mouth. MG swiftly fired his g*n, hitting the creature's eye. We were all deeply moved as MG gradually disappeared before our eyes. His final words were, "At last, zero." A profound silence enveloped the area as emotions swept over us. After minutes, everyone gradually resumed their activities—some returned indoors, others lingered outside for kills, and a few approached me personally to offer their congratulations. "You must vacate your space immediately and relocate to the leader's floor, Gabe," Rick said. I just nod my head in reply. All clan leaders own the highest floor, the penthouse, which is also where emergency goods are stored. I'm looking for Selene as we still have a planned meeting on the rooftop. But what are we going to do with our situation?
