Chapter 2 — The Man Behind the Offer Emma barely slept that night. Alexander Blackwood's photograph lay on the table beside her bed. She had stared at it so many times that his cold expression had become impossible to ignore. There was something about his eyes. Even in a photograph, they seemed to hide a secret. The following morning, Emma walked into the living room and found her father waiting for her. “Dad, I need answers.” Her father sighed. “I knew you would.” “Why would a billionaire want to marry me?” “I don't know everything,” he admitted. “But Alexander's lawyer contacted me three days ago.” “Three days ago?” “Yes.” Emma's eyes narrowed. “Then why didn't you tell me?” “Because I was hoping I could find another way.” Emma looked toward the window. “And now?” Her father lowered his head. “Now we don't have another way.” Silence filled the room. Emma hated the idea of marrying a stranger. She hated even more that her family had been pushed into a situation where marriage was being treated like a business transaction. Then her father's phone rang. He answered. After a few seconds, he looked at Emma. “It's Alexander.” Emma's heart began pounding. “Put him on speaker.” Her father hesitated before doing so. A deep, calm voice filled the room. “Miss Carter.” Emma stood straight. “Mr. Blackwood.” “I understand you have questions.” “I have many.” “Then ask.” Emma took a breath. “Why me?” There was a long silence on the other end. Finally, Alexander answered. “Because you are the only woman I am willing to marry.” Emma frowned. “That doesn't answer my question.” “No,” he replied coldly. “It doesn't.” “Then perhaps you should explain yourself.” “I will.” His voice became quieter. “But not over the phone.” Emma's stomach tightened. “When?” “Tonight.” “Where?” “My office. Eight o'clock.” The call ended. Emma stared at the phone. Her father looked worried. “You don't have to go.” Emma picked up Alexander's photograph. “Yes, Dad.” She looked directly into the man's emotionless eyes. “I think I do.” Because if she was going to marry Alexander Blackwood, she needed to know exactly what she was getting herself into.
