Chapter 3 — The Meeting

At exactly eight o'clock, Emma stepped into Blackwood Enterprises.
The building was enormous, with glass walls that reflected the city lights. She had never been inside a place that felt so powerful.
A receptionist looked up.
“Miss Carter?”
“Yes.”
“Mr. Blackwood is expecting you. The private elevator is over there.”
Emma thanked her and walked toward the elevator.
As the doors closed, nervousness settled over her.
She could still turn around.
She could walk away.
But then she remembered her father's exhausted face.
The elevator opened on the top floor.
A man in a dark suit stood waiting.
“Miss Carter, Mr. Blackwood is ready for you.”
Emma followed him through a quiet hallway.
The office doors opened.
Alexander stood beside the enormous windows, looking over the city.
He turned slowly.
For the first time, Emma saw him in person.
He was even more intimidating than in the photograph.
“Sit,” he said.
Emma remained standing.
“I'd rather stand.”
A faint expression crossed his face.
“Still stubborn.”
Emma froze.
“How do you know I'm stubborn?”
Alexander walked toward his desk.
“I've been watching you for a long time.”
Her heart skipped.
“What?”
He opened a folder and placed several photographs on the desk.
Emma stared at them.
They showed her leaving work, visiting her mother, and even walking through the park.
Fear replaced her anger.
“Why have you been watching me?”
Alexander's expression became serious.
“Because you are in danger.”
Emma stared at him.
“What are you talking about?”
“Your father's debts are not the real problem.”
Alexander pushed another document toward her.
Emma picked it up.
Her eyes widened.
Someone had been secretly buying her father's debts.
And that person wasn't the bank.
“Who is doing this?” she whispered.
Alexander looked directly into her eyes.
“A man who wants your family destroyed.”
Emma's hands trembled.
“Who?”
Alexander's voice dropped.
“My enemy.”
Then he leaned closer.
“And if you become my wife, he won't be able to touch you.”
