Chapter 6 — The Wedding Announcement

493 Words
Emma woke the next morning to a message from Alexander. Be ready at nine. No explanation. No greeting. Just four words. She stared at the screen. “Unbelievable,” she muttered. At nine exactly, a black car stopped outside her family's house. Her father looked through the window. “Is that him?” Emma nodded. Alexander stepped out of the car wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. He looked completely calm, as if he hadn't just changed Emma's entire life. He entered the house and greeted her father before turning to Emma. “We have things to arrange.” Emma crossed her arms. “You could at least say good morning.” A faint smile appeared on his face. “Good morning.” She rolled her eyes. “Much better.” Alexander handed her a folder. “Our wedding will take place in two weeks.” Emma's eyes widened. “Two weeks?” “Yes.” “You never said that.” “You never asked.” Emma opened the folder. Inside were details about the wedding, the ceremony, the guest list, and even a dress appointment. “You planned everything already?” “I don't like wasting time.” Emma looked up. “This is my wedding too.” Alexander's expression softened slightly. “Then choose what you want.” She wasn't expecting that. “What?” “The dress. The flowers. The ceremony. Whatever matters to you.” Emma studied him carefully. “You're giving me a choice?” “I said I need a wife, not a prisoner.” Those words stayed with her. Later that afternoon, Emma went to the dress designer Alexander had arranged. She tried several dresses, but none felt right. Then she saw it. A simple white gown with delicate lace and a long flowing train. She stepped in front of the mirror. For a moment, she imagined herself walking down the aisle. Then she remembered who would be waiting at the end. Alexander. Her heart beat faster. She quickly looked away from her reflection. “This is the one,” she whispered. That evening, Alexander arrived to collect her. When he saw the dress bag in her hands, he nodded. “Did you find one?” “Yes.” “Good.” Emma hesitated. “Alexander?” He looked at her. “Why are you doing all this for me?” His expression changed. For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he answered quietly. “Because I've wanted to protect you for a very long time.” Emma stared at him. Before she could ask what he meant, his phone rang. Alexander answered. His face immediately became cold. “What happened?” He listened. Then his eyes moved toward Emma. “We have a problem.” Emma's stomach dropped. “What?” Alexander ended the call. “Victor Hale knows about our wedding.” And suddenly, their marriage was no longer just a business arrangement.
