Chapter 8 — The Choice

The next morning, Maya woke before her alarm.
For a few seconds, she stared at the ceiling, trying to remember why her heart felt so heavy. Then everything came rushing back.
The argument.
The secret.
And the message she had received before going to sleep.
“Meet me at the old café. Come alone. There is something you need to know.”
Maya reached for her phone and read the message again.
She knew she should ignore it.
Every sensible part of her told her to stay away. But something inside her refused to let the mystery go.
By ten o’clock, she was standing outside the old café.
The place looked exactly as she remembered it—quiet, almost forgotten, with only a few customers sitting inside.
She walked through the door.
A man sitting in the corner stood immediately.
“Maya?”
She stopped.
She had never seen him before.
“How do you know my name?”
He glanced toward the door before answering.
“Because your father told me about you.”
Maya’s heart stopped.
“My father?”
The man nodded.
“He wanted me to find you if anything ever happened to him.”
Maya slowly sat down.
“What happened to my father?”
The man leaned closer.
“He didn’t disappear because he wanted to leave you.”
Maya felt tears forming in her eyes.
“Then why?”
The man reached into his coat and placed a small envelope on the table.
“Because he was protecting you.”
Maya stared at the envelope.
Her hands trembled as she picked it up.
There was only one sentence written on the front.
“For my daughter, when she is finally ready to know the truth.”
Maya looked up.
“What is inside?”
The man stood.
“Everything you have been searching for.”
Then he walked away.
Maya remained frozen at the table.
For years, she had believed her dreams were impossible.
Now, for the first time, she wondered if the truth had been waiting for her all along.
She opened the envelope.
And as she read the first line of her father’s letter, her entire world changed.
