As it turns out, that was the day I presented. It was my first heat, and I didn’t even see it coming. Normally there are signs when someone is about to present, such as a stronger sense of smell, hunger and fatigue. I suppose I had them, I just didn’t pay attention.
After Anka had checked on me, she let me stay with Jackson. Because I didn’t realize I was in pre-heat, there was no time to find a heatmate. Kaylum presented when he was 15, and travels across the island to Hempdale to spend his ruts twice a year.
I spent the four days of my heat Jackson, mostly because there was no-one else. Kaylum was in Hempdale, Jax is asexual and I don’t trust Clara. Jackson did take care of me, making sure I was comfortable, fed and hydrated. He even let me turn his bed into a nest while he slept on
