Chapter 15: Past Meets Present

243 Words
“They’re bluffing,” the lawyer said, glancing through the offer. “They’re afraid of what you still know.” Damien leaned forward. “Then let them be afraid.” He didn’t flinch. Didn’t hesitate. I sat beside him, proud and silently amazed. This wasn’t the broken man I’d found in that alley months ago. This was someone reclaiming his power—one breath, one choice at a time. After the meeting, as we walked back into the night air, Damien laced his fingers with mine. “I’m not the man I once was,” he said. “No,” I whispered. “You’re better.” And I meant it. We didn’t celebrate with champagne or grand gestures. We celebrated with silence, with the warmth of two bodies curled together on a worn couch, our baby kicking gently beneath my skin as if sensing the shift. Damien held me close, his head resting against my shoulder. “I forgot how it felt… to be proud of myself.” I stroked his hair, heart full. “You should be. You faced them. You didn’t run.” He lifted his face, eyes glinting with something rare and beautiful—peace. Then he kissed me. Soft and slow, like an exhale after holding his breath too long. There was no rush. No fear. Just love, honest and earned. And when we made love again that night, it wasn’t about escape—it was about being home.
