Neon Eclipse: The Last Symbiont
Chapter 3 – Shadows of the Lower City
Morning slowly spread across Lumina Arcadia, but the lower city never truly woke up or slept. It simply continued—alive with noise, movement, and restless energy.
Kael Yurei stood at the edge of the rooftop, watching the endless streets below. Vendors were opening their small metal stalls, neon signs flickered to life, and hover-bikes zipped through narrow lanes like shooting stars.
Beside him, the small symbiont stretched its glowing body. The silver-blue fur along its back shimmered as thin lines of neon energy pulsed softly beneath it.
Kael smiled slightly.
“You’re definitely not normal,” he said.
The creature blinked its bright sapphire eyes and gave a quiet chirp-like sound. Kael had never heard a creature like it before. It was part animal, part energy, and completely mysterious.
“Alright,” Kael continued, crouching down. “If we’re going to stick together, you need a name.”
The symbiont tilted its head curiously.
Kael thought for a moment.
“Auri,” he said finally. “Your glow kind of looks like an aura.”
The creature wagged its tail lightly, sending small sparks of light into the air.
Kael laughed.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
For a brief moment, the world felt peaceful.
But Kael knew peace never lasted long in the lower city.
He grabbed his worn jacket and began climbing down the metal ladder attached to the side of the building. Auri jumped lightly onto his shoulder, its small claws gripping the fabric without tearing it.
The streets were already busy when Kael reached ground level.
People rushed past carrying boxes, repairing machines, arguing over prices. Old speakers blasted music from the corners of buildings. Steam rose from food carts where vendors prepared breakfast for early workers.
Kael walked carefully through the crowd.
Auri stayed hidden under his jacket hood, but its glowing eyes occasionally peeked out.
“Stay quiet,” Kael whispered.
Symbionts were illegal.
If the wrong person noticed Auri, things could become dangerous very quickly.
Kael turned into a narrow alley he often used as a shortcut. The walls were covered with glowing graffiti and old posters advertising illegal tech.
Suddenly, Auri stiffened.
Kael felt it immediately.
“What is it?” he murmured.
Auri’s ears perked up.
Then voices echoed from the end of the alley.
Three figures stepped forward, blocking the exit.
Kael recognized them instantly.
Street gang members.
Their jackets carried the symbol of the Iron Fangs, a group known for stealing tech and selling it in the black market.
The tallest one smirked.
“Well, well. If it isn’t Kael the rooftop rat.”
Kael sighed quietly.
“Morning to you too, Brack.”
Brack cracked his knuckles.
“We heard something interesting last night,” he said. “A glowing creature spotted near this area.”
His eyes narrowed.
“You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that… would you?”
Kael kept his face calm.
“No idea what you’re talking about.”
Another gang member laughed.
“Search him.”
Kael’s muscles tensed.
Auri shifted under his hood.
Kael whispered softly, “Not yet.”
Two gang members stepped closer.
One grabbed Kael’s shoulder.
That was enough.
Kael twisted quickly, slipping out of the grip and stepping back.
“Wrong move,” Brack growled.
The gang rushed forward.
Kael dodged the first punch and ducked under the second. Years of surviving street fights had made him quick.
But there were three of them.
Brack swung hard.
Kael blocked, but the force pushed him against the wall.
Auri suddenly jumped from his shoulder.
The gang froze.
The small glowing symbiont stood between Kael and the attackers.
Its eyes burned brighter than before.
“What the—” one gang member whispered.
Brack’s greedy smile widened.
“A symbiont…”
He pulled out a small capture device from his belt.
“That little creature is worth a fortune.”
Kael stepped forward.
“You’re not touching it.”
Brack activated the device.
Metal arms extended from it like a trap.
Before Kael could react, the device shot forward toward Auri.
For a split second, everything went silent.
Then Auri howled.
Light exploded from its body.
A wave of neon energy burst outward, knocking the gang members backward.
The capture device shattered against the wall.
Brack slammed into a stack of crates.
Kael stared in shock.
Auri landed beside him, glowing brighter than ever.
The air around them crackled with faint blue sparks.
The gang members struggled to their feet.
“What was that?!” one of them shouted.
Brack wiped blood from his lip.
His confident grin had vanished.
“That thing is dangerous.”
He pointed at Kael.
“This isn’t over.”
The gang quickly retreated down the alley, disappearing into the crowd.
Silence returned.
Kael slowly knelt beside Auri.
“You okay?”
The symbiont’s glow dimmed slightly.
It looked tired but unharmed.
Kael exhaled in relief.
“That power…”
He looked at his hands.
For a moment during the burst of energy, he had felt something strange.
Like the power had flowed through him too.
Auri looked up at him.
Their eyes met.
For the first time, Kael truly understood.
They were connected.
Not just partners.
Something deeper.
A sudden voice echoed from above.
“Interesting.”
Kael looked up quickly.
Standing on the fire escape ladder of the nearby building was a girl with silver hair and sharp green eyes.
Lira Vance.
She calmly climbed down and stepped into the alley.
Kael stepped protectively in front of Auri.
“Who are you?”
Lira studied him carefully.
“A government enforcer,” she said calmly.
Kael’s stomach tightened.
Enforcers hunted symbionts.
This was bad.
Very bad.
But Lira didn’t attack.
Instead, she looked directly at Auri.
“I’ve been tracking symbiont activity for months,” she said.
Her eyes moved back to Kael.
“But I’ve never seen one bond like that before.”
Kael stayed silent.
Lira crossed her arms.
“Relax. If I wanted to arrest you, drones would already be here.”
Kael frowned.
“Then why are you here?”
Lira looked up at the sky.
High above the city, a faint ripple of strange light shimmered across the clouds.
“The Neon Eclipse is returning,” she said quietly.
Kael felt a chill.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Lira looked back at him.
“Everything.”
Her gaze shifted to Auri again.
“That symbiont… is connected to it.”
Kael shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Lira sighed.
“You’ll see soon enough.”
Sirens echoed faintly somewhere in the distance.
Lira stepped back toward the ladder.
“This city is about to change, Kael Yurei.”
Kael stiffened.
“You know my name?”
She smirked slightly.
“I know more than you think.”
Then she climbed up the ladder and disappeared onto the rooftop.
Kael stood there, stunned.
Auri nudged his arm.
Kael looked down at the glowing creature.
“Looks like things just got a lot bigger,” he muttered.
Above the city, the strange neon shimmer in the sky grew slightly brighter.
And far away, in a hidden laboratory deep beneath Lumina Arcadia, a large screen flickered to life.
A scientist watched footage from the alley fight.
His eyes gleamed with excitement.
“So the last symbiont has awakened,” he whispered.
The screen zoomed in on Kael and Auri.
“Excellent.”
The man smiled coldly.
“Begin Phase One.”
Back in the lower city, Kael had no idea that powerful forces had already begun moving.
But one thing was certain.
The adventure had truly begun..
