Elena left Wolfe Tower feeling like the world had tilted. The contract ,photograph the way Alexander said he had been watching
her none of it made sense.
Rain had started again by the time she reached home her father was pacing the living room.
“Well?” he asked anxiously.Elena dropped her bag on the table.
“He wants me to marry him.”
The words hung in the air like something poisonous her father froze
“What?”
“If I don’t,” she continued, “he’s pressing charges her father’s face drained of color.
“Elena ..you can’t.
“Then tell me the truth!” she snapped. “What did you take from him?”
Silence.
Her father ran a trembling hand through his hair.
“It wasn’t just company data,” he whispered. Her stomach tightened.
“What do you mean?”
He hesitated, then looked at her with guilt in his eyes.
“I accessed something I wasn’t supposed to see.”
“What?”A classified file.Her heart pounded.
“What was in it?”Her father swallowed hard.
“A list.”A list of what?”
His voice dropped to a whisper.
People Alexander Wolfe planned to destroy.Elena felt the air leave her lungs.
“That’s impossible,l wish it were and you’re telling me you stole that?”
“I copied it.”
Her mind raced.
“Why?”
Her father looked at her helplessly.
Because your name was on it.”The room went completely silent.Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs.
“My name?”
Before her father could answer
Her phone buzzed,a message from Alexander Wolfe.
She opened it slowly a single line appeared on the screen,
Have you made your decision, Elena?Or should I send the police to your father now?
