13 Laura lay awake listening to Callum and Sarah next door. Nigel was pretending to be asleep, lying on his side, but she knew his sleeping noises. He wasn't making any, not even deep breathing. "Can you hear that?" she whispered in case she happened to be wrong. Her husband said nothing; he lay facing away from her. Listening to Callum and Sarah made her cringe. The walls separating the two rooms were paper-thin. Her neighbour's laboured breathing, grunting, sounded like it was coming from inside her room. Laura took her pillow, covered her ears, and buried her face in it. She wished this was the first time she'd listened to Callum and his wife.
