Zara's Trembling hands reached for the file. Her heart çrashed in her chest as her eyes scanned the bold black letters. Divorce petition.
Her knees began to wobble and for a moment she thought she might collapse.
"A... Alex, what is this?" She stuttered.
"What does it look like? Or have you become suddenly blind?" Alex replied harshly.
Lena's satisfied smirk glistened through her fake tears. Alexander stood there liķe a stranger watching as Zara's hand rested on her chest. Pain evident in her eyes.
"This can't be happening," she whispered falling to the ground "You are ending our marriage because of her? Because of this..."
"One more insult from you and you will regret ever crossing parts with me." He growled.
"Alexander!"
"My mind is already made up Zara"
Zara's tears spilled freely, burning her cheeks. A sharp pain stabbed at her chest.
Lena slowly walked over to where Zara sat crumpled on the marble floor and knelt down gracefully beside Alexander. Her perfectly manicured fingers found his arm, stroking it gently as she whispered just enough for Zara to hear.
"She's not strong enough for you, Alex. Not beautiful enough, look at her... pathetic. " Lena's voice was like silk wrapped around poison. "A real woman would fight for her man, not fall apart like this. "
Zara's head snapped up, fire flashing in her tear-filled eyes "You manipulative daughter of-"
"Watch your filthy mouth," Alexander cut her off coldly "Lena is carrying my child. Show some respect."
"Respect?" Zara's voice cracked with bitter laughter. "She destroyed our marriage, and you want me to respect her?"
Lena's hand moved to rest protectively over her stomach as she leaned closer to Alexander. "This stress isn't good for the baby darling, maybe we should let her... process this alone." She said, a wry smile appearing at the corner of her lips.
"No," Alexander said firmly his çold gaze never leaving Zara's face. "She needs to hear this now."
Zara struggled to her feet, the divorce papers scattered around her like broken dreams "hear what? That you've been cheating on me for months? That everything we built was a lie?"
"Everything we built?" Alexander's laugh was cruel "what exactly did we build Zara? Five years together and what do you have to show for it? No children. No legacy just a wife who can't give me the one thing that matters."
Each words was a dagger to her heart. Zara wrapped her arms around herself as if she could put the pieces together. "We... we were trying the doctor's said-"
"The doctors said you're broken," Alexander interrupted brutally. "Defective. While lena..." He looked down at the woman clìnging to his arm. "Lena gave me what you never could in just six months."
Lena's eyes sparkled with victory as she pressed herself closer to Alexander. "I'm sorry it had to be this way Zara. But Alex deserves to be happy. He deserves a real family."
"A real family," Zara repeated numbly. "Five years meant nothing to you?"
"Five wasted years," Alexander confirmed without hesitation. "Years I could have spent with someone who actually brought value to my life. Do you know what it's like being married to someone who takes and takes but give nothing back?"
"Takes?" Zara's voice rose. "I supported your career, I stood by you through every business dèal every late night, every-"
"Every what? Every failure to conceive? Every disappointment when the pregnancy tests came back negative month after month? And when you manage to conceive your body couldn't hold it" His words were ice-cold bullets. "You are not just barren, Zara. You are selfish. Making our problems about you when all I wanted was a child."
Lena stood up slowly, her hand never leaving Alexander's arm. "Maybe it's time she left, Alex. This can't be healthy for any of us."
"You are right," Alexander nodded, his decision final. "Zara, pack your things, I want you out of my penthouse by tomorrow night."
"Our penthouse," zara whispered desperately. "This is my home too."
"Was," Alexander corrected. "It was your home. Now it's going to be a real home. For my family."
Lena practically glowed with satisfaction. "I'll help you redecorate darling. Make it perfect for our little one."
The casual way she said 'our' felt like a slap across Zara's face. She looked around the penthouse that had been her sanctuary, her haven, now feeling like a museum of her failure.
"Where am I supposed to go?" Zara's voice was barely above a whisper.
"That's not my problem anymore," Alexander replied without emotion "your lawyer will contact mine. Sign the papers, take whatever settlement is offered and disappear from my life."
"Just like that?" Zara searched his face for any trace of the man she'd fallen in love with "Five years, and you are throwing me away just like garbage?"
"I'm choosing happiness over obligation," Alexander said simply. "I'm choosing a future over a mistake."
Lena's smile was radiant as she looked up at him. "You're so brave, Alex. It takes courage to admit when something isn't working"
"Courage?" Zara's voice cracked with hysteria. "All I see is a coward running to his pregnant mistress instead of saving our marriage!"
Alexander's face darkened dangerously. "Careful, Zara. My patience with you is running very thin."
"Your patience?" Zara laughed bitterly. "What about my patience? Putting up with your mood swings, your impossible standards, your mother who never thought I was good enough?"
"Maybe she was right" Alexander said quietly, and those four words destroyed what little was left of Zara's heart.
Lena stepped forward her voice dripping with fake sympathy. "This is probably for the best, Zaŕa. You can start over. Find someone who appreciates what you have to offer."
The condescension in her tone made Zara's blood boil. "And what exactly do I have to offer according to you... mistress?"
Lena pretended to think, her fingers tapping against her lips mockingly "well, you're... dedicated. Loyal like a pet, really."
"Lena," Alexander warned, but there was amusement in his voice.
"I'm just trying to help," Lena said innocently. "She needs to face reality look at her, Alex. Really look at her. She's already falling apart, and we haven't even started the divorce proceedings yet how could someone so week ever handle married to someone as powerful as you.
Zara stared at them both, standing together like they belonged, like she was the intruder in her own home. The realization hit her like a physical blow – they were right about one thing. She was broken. But maybe, just maybe, being broken was exactly what she needed to become something stronger.
"You know what?" Zara said suddenly, her voice steadying for the first time all evening. "You're absolutely right."
Both Alexander and Lena looked surprised by her sudden composure.
"I am weak," Zara continued, wiping the tears from her face. "I am broken. And I have been a fool." She looked directly at Alexander. "But not for the reasons you think."
She bent down and gathered the scattered divorce papers, went over to where her small hermes bag was picked up a pen and signed the divorce papers.
"I'll be gone by tomorrow morning, I also do not need a dime from you Alex" she said with quiet dignity. "But this isn't over, Alexander. Not by a long shot."
And with that, Zara walked out of the living room, leaving Alexander and Lena staring after her in stunned silence.
