Chapter 10: A Faint Blue Line The morning sun filtered weakly through the sheer curtains of the master bedroom. Ela sat at the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the small white stick in her trembling hands. Her lips parted slightly, and her breath came slowly and slowly. Two blue lines. Two sharp, undeniable lines. Pregnant. She pressed her hand against her abdomen, as though hoping to feel something stir. A flutter. A confirmation beyond the test. But of course, it was too soon. The only confirmation she had was the whirlwind of emotion threatening to spill out of her chest. She didn’t know how long she sat there. Time melted. The world outside buzzed with the sounds of autumn—leaves crunching, birds calling, the distant hum of traffic. Inside, silence enveloped her like a heavy blanket. Pregnant. Her first thought had been wonder. Her second had been Stuart. Her third had been fear. They hadn’t planned this. In fact, nothing about their life together had been planned beyond the lines of a cold, contractual agreement. A marriage of convenience. Appearances. Legal protection for his business. Nothing more. Except… it had become more. So much more. She looked again at the test and exhaled slowly. She would have to tell him. Soon. --- The day passed in a blur. She tried to busy herself in the garden, arranging late-blooming flowers in neat rows. But even the dirt beneath her nails couldn’t distract her from the way her body already felt different. Her senses sharper. Her mind more scattered. Lunch was untouched. Her phone chimed with texts from Victoria, but she didn’t answer. How could she? Even Victoria didn’t know about the pregnancy yet. By evening, Ela finally gathered the courage to go back inside and clean up. Her reflection in the bathroom mirror startled her. Had she always looked this pale? Her eyes so wide, filled with unspoken worry? She splashed cold water on her face and whispered to herself, “You can do this. You’re strong. Stronger than you think.” Still, her stomach twisted in knots. Would Stuart be excited? Scared? Distant? Or worse… angry? Just then, she heard the door downstairs open and close. His footsteps. He was home early. She clutched the counter for support. Here we go. --- But before she could tell him, he told her something first. “I had a call from our lawyers today,” he said, walking into the sitting room where she waited. She looked up. “Lawyers?” “They reviewed our file… there’s been a complication. A major one.” Ela frowned, heart pounding. “What kind of complication?” “We were never legally married.” Silence. Then, “What?” He rubbed the back of his neck, frustrated. “The firm that handled our contract? One of the associates was removed for malpractice. Turns out he never filed our marriage license.” Ela’s throat tightened. “So… we’re not…?” “Not officially. Not on paper.” She stood slowly, wrapping her arms around herself. “And what does that mean for us?” He looked her in the eyes. “It means we can fix it. If you want to. I already called someone. We can do a small ceremony. Quiet. Just us.” Ela stared at him, her mind now spinning faster. This was too much. The pregnancy. The marriage. Or lack thereof. He took a step toward her. “Ela… I want this. I want you.” Her lips trembled. “I’m pregnant.” The words came out before she could stop them. His eyes widened. “What?” “I found out this morning.” He blinked. “You’re sure?” “Yes.” Another long pause. Stuart turned away, staring out the window as though searching for answers in the fading light. “This changes everything,” he said at last. Ela’s heart dropped. “I know,” she whispered. “And I understand if you’re scared. I am too. But this… this baby is ours. It’s real. More real than any paper or promise.” He didn’t respond. His silence stretched between them like a chasm. Her voice cracked. “If you’re not ready, I’ll do this alone. I won’t force you to be a father. But I will be a mother. With or without you.” “Don’t say that,” he said, spinning back toward her. “Why not?” she asked. “Because it’s true?” “Because I don’t want you to do this alone.” “Then prove it.” “I need time,” he admitted. “Then take it,” she said softly. “But know that I’m not waiting for permission to love this child.” He looked at her, and for the first time in a long while, she saw not the cold CEO, not the wounded man haunted by ghosts—but someone utterly human. Terrified. Vulnerable. She turned and walked away, this time not out of spite—but self-preservation. --- She didn’t see him for the rest of the night. When she woke the next morning, the guest bedroom door was shut. He hadn’t returned to their shared room. A note lay on her bedside table. “I need to clear my head. I’ll be at the lake house. I just… need to think. —Stuart.” She folded the note carefully, her expression unreadable. Then she whispered aloud, “I hope when you come back, you’ll choose us.” Outside, the world kept turning. But inside her, a new life had begun.
