Chapter 20: The Chase
Stuart’s hands trembled as he stared at the video on his phone. The image of Ela walking into her old apartment, her arms cradling their twins, made his blood run cold. The message was clear: someone was watching them. Someone knew exactly where to find her.
Ela.
The twins.
He couldn’t wait another moment.
He rushed out of the boardroom, slamming the door behind him, his mind racing.
---
Ela was just finishing a phone call with Victoria when the doorbell rang.
She froze, the hairs on the back of her neck rising. She hadn’t been expecting anyone. No one ever came by uninvited. Not since the twins were born.
Her heart thudded in her chest as she walked cautiously toward the door. When she opened it, there was no one there. Only a small package on the ground.
She bent down to pick it up, the weight of it strange in her hands. She could feel her pulse quicken as she brought the box inside. The label was blank, no return address.
It was a simple cardboard box, but something about it sent a chill down her spine.
The contents, however, were worse than she could have imagined.
Inside the box was a photograph. A recent one of Ela and the twins, taken from a distance.
Her stomach churned as she held the photo. Someone had been watching them.
And this time, they were getting closer.
Ela’s hands shook as she dropped the photo, the reality sinking in.
Stuart hadn’t returned her calls for hours. The text she sent him earlier was still unread.
She was alone.
Alone with her children, in a home that no longer felt safe.
She rushed to the nursery, grabbing Aayan and Amira. She held them close, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. The only thing she knew for sure was that she had to protect them.
But how?
She had nowhere to turn.
---
Stuart was racing through the streets of the city, his mind a whirlpool of thoughts. Every step he took, every turn he made, only seemed to bring him closer to an inescapable truth.
Whoever was sending these threats knew more than they should. They had access to their lives. To their home.
But what did they want?
The video. The photo. It was clear now—they were targeting Ela and the twins.
He dialed her number again. And again.
No answer.
His pulse quickened. He didn’t have time to wait.
By the time he reached the penthouse, the sun had already set, the streets lit with the cold, unforgiving glow of city lights. He could feel it in the pit of his stomach—something was wrong.
He stormed through the front door, his breath ragged, only to find it empty.
Ela wasn’t there.
The nursery was untouched, the twins’ cribs empty. His heart skipped a beat as he looked around, the panic rising.
“Ela!” he shouted.
No answer.
Stuart ran to the balcony, his eyes scanning the street below. Nothing.
His hands clenched into fists as he turned back to the apartment. His phone buzzed. It was a message.
The text read: “I have her. Come alone if you want her back.”
Stuart’s chest tightened. The message was clear. Whoever it was had taken Ela. And they were playing a game with him.
His mind raced as he considered the options. He could call the police. He could bring in security. But he couldn’t risk them being too slow. Whoever had Ela wanted him to make a mistake.
He had no choice but to face this alone.
---
Ela had no idea how long she had been locked in the small room.
Her head throbbed, her wrists sore from the tight restraints. She had struggled against them when she first woke up, but it was no use. The room was dark, the air thick with tension.
She had tried to call Stuart. She had tried everything to reach him, but the phone had been taken from her.
Her mind raced. What did they want from her? Why was she here? Who had taken her?
She wasn’t sure how much time had passed when the door creaked open.
A figure stepped into the room, tall and shadowed.
Ela’s heart skipped a beat.
“Stuart?” she whispered, her voice hoarse.
The figure didn’t respond. Instead, the door slammed shut behind him, the sound echoing through the empty room.
She strained her eyes in the darkness, trying to make out the figure’s face.
It wasn’t Stuart.
It was someone she didn’t recognize.
Her blood ran cold as he stepped closer, a smirk on his lips.
“I’m glad you’re awake,” he said. His voice was low, calculating.
Ela’s heart raced, her breath quickening. “Who are you?”
He chuckled, stepping into the light. His eyes were cold, dark, and unsettling.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” he asked, his grin widening.
Ela’s mind raced. She had never seen him before in her life.
“No,” she said slowly, her voice trembling. “Who are you?”
He laughed again. “I’m the one who’s going to make you regret everything.”
Ela’s pulse raced as she realized the danger she was in. This wasn’t just about Stuart anymore. This was personal.
This man knew something about her. Something dark.
And she had to find a way out.
---
Stuart was on the move.
He had no plan, no back-up. He just needed to find her.
His mind was a blur, focused only on one thing: getting to Ela before it was too late.
The message had led him to an abandoned building on the outskirts of the city. The air was thick with dust and the scent of decay. As he crept inside, his heart pounded in his chest.
Every step echoed through the empty halls.
“Ela!” he shouted, his voice hoarse.
Silence.
Then, a faint sound—like a soft whimper—came from the floor above.
Stuart’s heart skipped a beat. He moved faster, the adrenaline pushing him forward.
He reached the door at the top of the stairs. It was locked.
Without thinking, he kicked it open, the door splintering under the force.
Inside, he saw her.
Ela.
Tied to a chair.
Her face was pale, her eyes filled with fear, but she was alive.
“Stuart!” she cried out, her voice breaking.
He rushed to her side, his hands shaking as he untied the ropes.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice tight with panic.
She nodded weakly, tears streaming down her face. “I’m fine. Just get me out of here.”
Stuart lifted her into his arms, her fragile form feeling like the weight of the world. He kissed her forehead, relief flooding through him.
“We’re leaving. Now.”
But as he turned to leave, a shadow moved in the doorway.
The figure who had taken her.
Stuart froze.
“You won’t leave,” the man sneered. “Not until I’ve had my revenge.”
