Selene's POV:
The Shadowfang Pack's territory was nothing like I imagined. Hidden deep within a forest of ancient pines, their village was a mix of rustic cabins and modern fortifications. The air buzzed with tension as I walked through the center of their settlement, every pair of eyes locked on me.
They weren't friendly stares. Wolves paused their tasks to whisper, their gazes flickering between me and the scar on my chest—the Mark of the Moon. It wasn't just curiosity; it was suspicion, fear, and even resentment.
"They think I'm a threat," I muttered under my breath, trying to ignore the weight of their stares.
"Or their savior," Liam replied, walking beside me. His calm presence was the only thing keeping me grounded.
"Great," I said dryly. "No pressure."
Kara's POV:
I watched Selene stride through our village like she belonged here, her defiance written in every step. My wolf bristled at the sight of her. She was trouble, plain and simple.
"Mark my words, Liam," I said as we stood on the edge of the training field, watching her spar with one of our warriors. "She's going to tear this pack apart."
Liam turned to me, his silver eyes sharp. "She's not the enemy, Kara. Marcus is."
I bit back a growl. "Then why does it feel like she's the one pulling us into chaos? The pack doesn't trust her, and neither do I."
He didn't respond, but his silence said enough. Liam was drawn to her—I could see it in the way his gaze lingered on her. It stung more than I cared to admit.
Selene's POV:
The training session was brutal, but I refused to show weakness. If the pack wanted to see what I was made of, I'd show them.
"Again," barked Kara, her arms crossed as she watched me spar against one of the larger warriors. Her tone was sharp, her eyes colder than the frost that coated the forest in the mornings.
I barely had time to catch my breath before my opponent lunged at me. I ducked, countering with a kick that sent him sprawling. The crowd murmured, but Kara's expression didn't budge.
"Not bad," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "But raw instinct won't save you in a real fight."
I straightened, wiping sweat from my brow. "Maybe not, but it just saved me now."
The corner of her mouth twitched, but she didn't smile. "You think you're clever, don't you?"
"I think I'm tired of being underestimated," I shot back, meeting her gaze without flinching.
The tension crackled between us, thick and suffocating. For a moment, it felt like the entire pack held its breath.
Liam's POV:
I stood at the edge of the training field, torn between admiration and frustration. Selene was fearless, but her defiance only added fuel to the fire burning between her and Kara.
"Kara," I called, stepping forward as the Beta's eyes narrowed at Selene. "That's enough for today."
She turned to me, her jaw tight. "You're coddling her."
"I'm making sure we don't tear ourselves apart," I said evenly. "Selene's part of this pack now, whether you like it or not."
Kara's eyes flicked between me and Selene, and I could see the hurt beneath her hardened exterior. She didn't say another word, just turned and walked away.
I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. Keeping this pack together was hard enough without the added tension.
"Thanks for the save," Selene said, stepping up beside me. Her voice was laced with sarcasm, but her eyes betrayed a hint of vulnerability.
"You don't need saving," I replied. "But you do need to find a way to work with Kara."
She crossed her arms. "She hates me."
"She doesn't hate you," I said, though I wasn't entirely sure. "She's protective of the pack, and she doesn't know you yet. Give her time."
Selene's expression softened, but she didn't respond.
Kara's POV:
I stormed away from the training field, my chest tight with frustration. Liam might have been blind to Selene's effect on the pack, but I wasn't.
The whispers had started the moment she arrived. Some called her the savior of the prophecy, the one destined to unite the packs. Others feared she'd bring ruin.
I didn't know which version to believe, but I couldn't ignore the fact that Marcus's attacks had grown more frequent since she showed up.
She was dangerous—whether Liam wanted to admit it or not.
Selene's POV:
Later that night, I sat on the porch of the cabin Liam had given me, staring up at the stars. The pack was still awake, their voices carrying through the forest.
For the first time in a long time, I felt something close to belonging. But it was fragile, like a thread that could snap at any moment.
The door creaked open, and Liam stepped out, his presence as steady as ever.
"Can't sleep?" he asked, leaning against the railing.
I shook my head. "Too much on my mind."
"Welcome to the pack," he said with a wry smile.
I chuckled, but it was short-lived. "Do you really think they'll ever trust me?"
"They will," he said, his voice full of quiet conviction. "You just have to give them a reason to."
I looked at him, searching for the doubt that had plagued me since I arrived. But all I saw was belief.
Maybe, just maybe, I could be part of something bigger than myself. But first, I had to survive the storm brewing within the pack—and the one waiting just beyond the trees.
