Chapter 5: The Rogue Threat

825 Words
Marcus's POV: The night was alive with the howls of my rogues, a symphony of chaos that echoed through the dense, mist-laden woods. It wasn't the disciplined unity of a pack—it was something darker, more primal. And it was mine. I stood on the edge of the clearing, the Shadowstone pulsing in my hand. Its dark energy coursed through me, coiling around my veins like a living thing. Power like I'd never known surged with every beat of my heart, but it came at a price. Whispers clawed at the edges of my mind, feeding my hatred, my ambition, and my hunger for destruction. Once, I had been an Alpha, respected and feared. My pack had thrived under my leadership—until they betrayed me. Cast out, abandoned to the wilds, I'd clawed my way back, building an army of those who, like me, had been forsaken. But revenge wasn't enough anymore. I needed more. "She's the key," I muttered to myself, my voice a rasp. "Selene," the whispers hissed in unison, their voices dripping with malice. Flashback: The Fall of Marcus's Pack It had started with whispers of dissent among my pack. I'd ignored them at first, confident in my leadership. But I underestimated the rot growing beneath the surface. My Beta, the one I trusted most, led the coup. I could still see his smug face as he declared me unfit to lead, the pack turning their backs on me one by one. They left me for dead, a broken wolf in an unforgiving wilderness. But I survived. I hunted them down, one by one, watching the light leave their eyes as I exacted my revenge. Yet, it wasn't enough. Their betrayal had shattered something in me, leaving only an abyss that craved power and destruction. Marcus's Present-Day Plans Now, my sights were set on the Shadowfang Pack. Liam Greyson and his wolves had been a thorn in my side for too long, disrupting my plans and protecting Selene. Selene. I'd seen her once, years ago, when she was just a child. Even then, I felt the pull of her power, the Mark of the Moon etched onto her chest like a brand of destiny. She didn't know what she was, but I did. She was the key to uniting the packs—or tearing them apart. And I intended to use her. The Shadowstone throbbed in my hand, its darkness resonating with my own. I'd acquired it after months of searching, following the breadcrumbs of an old legend. The stone was said to amplify a werewolf's strength, making them nearly invincible. But it came with a cost: a slow descent into madness. For me, that wasn't a cost—it was a gift. "Soon," I growled, turning to face the circle of rogues gathered in the clearing. They weren't like the disciplined soldiers I'd once led. They were castoffs, feral and broken, but I'd given them purpose. They worshipped me, their loyalty born not of respect but of fear. "The Shadowfang Pack thinks they can hide her from me," I snarled, my voice carrying through the air. "But they're wrong. We'll tear through their territory, burn their homes, and bring Selene to me." The rogues howled in agreement, their voices blending into a cacophony of rage and bloodlust. Marcus's Ally: The Witch Catrina "Careful, Marcus," a voice purred from the shadows. I turned to see Catrina, the witch who had helped me locate the Shadowstone. She was as beautiful as she was dangerous, her raven-black hair falling in waves around her sharp, angular face. "You're playing with fire," she said, her eyes flicking to the stone in my hand. "Fire is what I need," I shot back. "And if you've done your job, Catrina, I'll have it." Her lips curved into a sly smile. "I've upheld my end of the bargain. But don't forget, the Shadowstone doesn't just grant power—it takes as much as it gives. It feeds on your soul." "I don't need a soul," I said, stepping closer to her. "I need victory. And with Selene's power and the Shadowstone, I'll have it." She tilted her head, studying me. "Just remember, Marcus, the stone has a mind of its own. And it's far older—and far hungrier—than you can imagine." I dismissed her warning with a growl, turning my attention back to the rogues. Selene's Threat Looms Larger My army was ready. Every rogue under my command was willing to die for the cause—or, more accurately, for me. Selene wouldn't remain hidden for long. The Shadowfang Pack might think they could protect her, but they'd underestimated my determination. I clenched the Shadowstone, its power pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. The darkness within me swelled, whispering promises of destruction and dominance. "Soon," I said, a sinister grin spreading across my face. "The werewolf world will bow to me—or burn."
