Selene's POV:
The wind howled through the dense forest as we set off at dawn, the sun barely piercing through the thick canopy of trees. Every step away from the safety of the Shadowfang Pack felt like stepping closer to danger, but there was no turning back. The Lightstone was our only hope.
Liam walked ahead, his stance tense, his senses on high alert. Kara stayed close behind him, her sharp gaze scanning the surroundings for threats. Ronan trailed a few paces behind me, his presence steady and unyielding. The tension between us all was palpable, but the stakes left no room for hesitation.
"We need to move quickly," Liam said, breaking the silence. His voice was commanding but laced with worry. "Marcus's rogues won't give us much of a head start."
"They'll follow the scent," Ronan added, his tone grim. "And they won't stop until they've taken what they want."
I didn't need to ask what he meant. They want me.
Danger Lurks
The first attack came just as the sun dipped below the horizon. A sudden rustle in the underbrush, followed by guttural snarls, sent adrenaline coursing through my veins.
"Get ready!" Liam barked, shifting seamlessly into his wolf form. His silver fur glinted in the fading light as he lunged at the first rogue.
Kara fought with ruthless precision, her daggers flashing as she took down one wolf after another. Ronan, in his wolf form, moved like a shadow, his strikes calculated and deadly.
I stood my ground, summoning every ounce of strength I had. Though I was still learning to control my powers, I could feel the Mark of the Moon pulsing within me, a surge of energy that made my attacks stronger, more precise.
When the battle was over, I leaned against a tree, panting. The ground was littered with fallen rogues, their bodies already dissolving into ash.
"You held your own," Kara said, surprising me. Her tone wasn't as icy as usual, and there was a glimmer of respect in her eyes.
"Thanks," I managed, wiping the sweat from my brow.
She didn't reply, but the faintest hint of a smile tugged at her lips before she turned away.
Moments of Connection
That night, we camped by a small stream, the sound of rushing water mingling with the crackle of the fire. Liam sat close to me, his presence warm and comforting despite the chill in the air.
"Are you okay?" he asked, his silver eyes searching mine.
"I'm fine," I said, though my body ached from the fight. "Just... tired."
He nodded, his gaze lingering on me for a moment longer than necessary. "We'll find the Lightstone, Selene. I promise."
His words should have reassured me, but the weight of his promise only reminded me of how much rested on our success.
Later, as the others drifted off to sleep, Ronan approached me. His dark eyes glimmered in the firelight, filled with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher.
"You're stronger than I expected," he said, his voice low.
"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"It's a truth," he replied simply.
There was something about Ronan that drew me in—an air of mystery, of unspoken pain. He'd revealed only fragments of his past, but the more I learned, the more I wanted to understand him.
"Why did you swear to protect my family?" I asked, unable to hold back the question any longer.
He hesitated, his jaw tightening. "Your mother saved my life once. I owed her a debt I could never repay."
The honesty in his words made my chest tighten. "And now you're stuck protecting me."
He shook his head. "It's not a burden, Selene. It's my choice."
Bridges Built
Over the following days, the journey grew harder. The terrain became more treacherous, the rogue attacks more frequent. But something unexpected began to happen—Kara started to change.
At first, her hostility softened into quiet tolerance. Then, during one brutal fight, when I was cornered by two rogues, she stepped in without hesitation, her daggers slicing through the air.
"Don't think this means I like you," she said afterward, but there was no venom in her voice.
"Wouldn't dream of it," I replied, a small grin tugging at my lips.
Bit by bit, the ice between us melted. I started to see a different side of Kara—the fierce loyalty she had for the pack, the pain she carried from battles fought and loved ones lost.
One night, as we sat around the fire, she surprised me by sharing a story about her younger brother, who had died in a rogue attack years ago.
"I've seen what they can do," she said, her voice soft but firm. "And I won't let that happen again. Not to this pack. Not to you."
Her words resonated with me, and for the first time, I felt like we were fighting for the same cause—not just out of duty, but out of shared pain and determination.
A Growing Bond
Through it all, my bond with Liam grew stronger. He was my anchor, always steady, always there. But there was something undeniable about Ronan as well—a connection I couldn't explain.
The tension between the two men was subtle but present, a quiet rivalry that simmered beneath the surface. I tried to ignore it, focusing on the task at hand, but the pull between us all was impossible to deny.
As the days turned into weeks, I began to understand what it meant to be part of a pack—not just a group of individuals, but a family bound by loyalty, trust, and love.
And though the path ahead was uncertain, I knew one thing for sure: I wasn't alone anymore.
The journey to find the Lightstone had begun, and with it, the battle for our survival—and my destiny—was underway.
