Chapter 8: Bonded by the Moon

1022 Words
Selene's POV: The air was heavy with tension as we moved deeper into uncharted territories. The landscape was wild and unforgiving—craggy mountains, endless forests, and rivers that raged like beasts. Every step brought us closer to the Lightstone, but the journey felt like it was carving pieces out of us. Liam had taken on the role of leader effortlessly, but I could see the weight on his shoulders. Every decision, every risk, it all fell on him. Kara was his right hand, her fierce determination unwavering. Ronan, with his quiet strength and enigmatic presence, kept to the edges, always watching, always guarding. And then there was me, the one they were risking everything for. The one with a destiny I didn't fully understand. Under Moonlight That night, we camped in a forest bathed in silvery moonlight. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, their shadows dancing across the ground. The fire crackled softly, its warmth a stark contrast to the cool night air. I sat a little apart from the others, gazing up at the full moon. Its light seemed to seep into my very soul, stirring something deep and ancient within me. "Mind some company?" Liam's voice broke through my thoughts. I glanced up to find him standing a few feet away, his silver eyes reflecting the moonlight. "Sure," I said, patting the ground beside me. He sat down, the silence between us both comforting and charged. For a moment, we just listened to the sounds of the forest—the rustle of leaves, the distant call of an owl. "There's something about the moon, isn't there?" I said softly, more to myself than to him. "It connects us," Liam replied. "It's a reminder of who we are... and what we've lost." I turned to look at him, his face shadowed but vulnerable. "What have you lost, Liam?" He hesitated, his jaw tightening. Then, as if the moonlight itself coaxed the words out of him, he began to speak. Liam's Confession "When I was younger, my brother, Caleb, was everything to me," he said, his voice low and raw. "He was reckless, always getting into trouble, but he had this... light about him. Everyone loved him." I could hear the pain in his words, see it etched into his features. "What happened?" I asked gently. "Marcus happened," Liam said, his fists clenching. "We were ambushed by his rogues. Caleb was... he was too young to fight, but he tried. I wasn't fast enough. I wasn't strong enough to save him." The anguish in his voice broke my heart. I reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Liam, that wasn't your fault." He shook his head, his eyes glistening. "I was supposed to protect him. And I failed. Every decision I make as Alpha, every battle I fight, it's all for him. To make up for what I couldn't do that day." I didn't know what to say. Words felt inadequate. Instead, I did the only thing I could—I wrapped my arms around him. The Mate Bond For a moment, he stiffened, but then he relaxed into my embrace. The bond between us flared to life, a warmth that spread through my entire being. It wasn't just physical; it was deeper, more profound. When he pulled back, his gaze locked onto mine, and the air between us seemed to hum with energy. "Selene," he whispered, his voice barely audible. Before I could respond, he leaned in, his lips capturing mine. The kiss was intense, a perfect mix of passion and vulnerability. It felt like the world had stopped, like nothing else existed but us. But as quickly as it began, I pulled away, my heart racing. "I can't," I said, my voice trembling. "Why not?" Liam asked, his expression a mixture of confusion and hurt. "Because I can't lose myself in this," I admitted, struggling to find the words. "There's too much at stake. If I let myself... if I give in, what happens if I lose you? What happens if I fail?" Liam reached for my hand, his touch grounding me. "You won't fail, Selene. And you won't lose me. But I can't force you to trust that. You have to find it in your own time." Unspoken Feelings As I walked away to clear my head, I caught a glimpse of Ronan standing in the shadows. His expression was unreadable, but there was something in his eyes—something that made my chest tighten. He stepped forward, his voice soft. "It's hard, isn't it? To let someone in when you've spent your whole life building walls." I didn't answer, but the truth of his words hung in the air. "Liam is a good man," Ronan continued. "But don't forget, Selene—you're more than just a mate. You're a leader. A fighter. You have to trust yourself first." "Why do you care so much?" I asked, my voice sharper than I intended. He hesitated, then said, "Because I've seen what happens when someone like you is forced to stand alone. And I won't let that happen again." Kara's Doubts Meanwhile, Kara watched the night's events unfold from a distance. She had always been certain of her place in the pack, certain of her bond with Liam. But seeing him with Selene, seeing the way they looked at each other, shook something loose inside her. Was her hostility toward Selene born out of love for Liam? Or was it fear—fear of being replaced, of losing the only family she had left? Kara didn't have the answers, but one thing was clear: Selene wasn't the enemy. Not anymore. A Turning Point As the moon climbed higher into the sky, I lay awake, staring at the stars. My mind was a whirlwind of emotions—about Liam, about Ronan, about everything that lay ahead. I didn't know what the future held, but one thing was certain: the bond I felt, not just with Liam but with the entire pack, was growing stronger. And I would need every ounce of that strength to face what was coming.
