V—Dreams.I returned to the bank that morning, a very different man from the one who had left it so carelessly but a few short days ago. I was no longer an easy-going, aimless sort of creature at peace with all the world, but instead was now a calculating and hard-bitten adventurer who was prepared to accept as a cold fact that at any moment all men's hands might be against him. But if I was in any degree inclined to assume my attitude as an heroic one, I was speedily disillusioned, and put in my proper place within a few minutes even of my arrival at the bank. The whole atmosphere was so inimical to any spirit of lawlessness.
