"Nothing much the matter with that man this afternoon," he smiled. "I drove him to the station and stood him a drink. He seemed O.K. at once." His eyes roved round the room. "By-the-by, I must thank you for recommending me to the hotel. It's a topping place and the food seems quite good." He sat down in the armchair next to mine and put his book upon the table. "Are you stopping here, too, may I ask?" "Yes," I replied coldly. "I'm on duty here in the town at the bank." "Oh, good!" he exclaimed in a most friendly way, "then I hope I shall see a lot of you.
