Chapter 3
The day felt weird after my dad and Evans little squabble. My dad keeps trying to keep distance between us, but Evan still sneaks in my room at night and we cuddle. I'm not sure as to why my dad keeps trying to do this when he and my mom met the exact same way. Honestly has caused me to consider leaving for town earlier.
"We're leaving earlier. I can't stand how my dad is acting anymore. Where do you want to start first?" I turned around in his arms to look at him. We're currently on the roof watching the sunset. This is the only time that we really have any sort of peace. I instinctively cuddled more into his arm awaiting his answer.
"Let's leave early tomorrow. That way we have a good chance of people being asleep and hopefully find my brother quicker. Do you want to come back here when we do?" He laid out his plans and I nodded in agreement. Leaving early will also help my dad not catch onto us.
We have agreed to come back here once we get his brother Ethan so we can wait out the storm as we call it. My dad has been trying to reach out to the state police, but the Phone lines have been taken down. They thankfully left up the power lines so we still have that.
"Guys come one it's time for dinner." We both heard my mom call from within the house. He tightened his arms around me and I curled more into him. This last week with him as been amazing and I wish we would have met on different circumstances. Then again I'm still happy, because it's one thing that brought us closer.
"Come on. They'll end up coming up for us and I don't want to hear another lecture from your dad." Evan reluctantly stood and reach out his hand to me. We have received around three lectures on how we aren't aloud to cuddle or have any sort of contact other than speaking. He wouldn't even allow me and Evan to be training partners.
We walked down the steps hand and hand. My other began to instinctively twirl my necklace. Every since Evan gave it to me, I never took it off. It meant the world to me and I loved it, he knew that as well. Every Time he seen it on me or seen me messing with it, he'd get this smirk on his face.
"Look mom, their holding hands now. How romantic." No sooner had we enter the kitchen, had Annalise spewed what she could see. Anthony chose to always gag, Annalise would exclaim how romantic it is, mom would smile warmly, while my dad glared daggers at Evan. My dad's reactions are beginning to become very annoying, I'm eighteen now.
"Yes, yes. We're holding hands get over it. By now you'd think ya'll are used to it. It's been what a week?" I questioned Evan, to which he nodded. All of them knew things changed when I had received the necklace. "Where's dad?" I then took notice that he is absent.
"He's gone out to hunt. He should be back in an hour or so. Let's eat and I'll be making him some when he arrives." My mom spoke in her soft tone. We ate in a comfortable silence for once. Then I got an idea, with my dad being gone Evan and I could get the things we needed for tomorrow.
"Meet me in the basement in five minutes. Make sure no one sees you." I whispered to him while we dismissed dinner. He returned my comment with a smirk which earned him an eye roll. The basement has the weapons and canned foods. We would need to take with us. I chose to already head down and start packing my bag.
Another five minutes later and he's down in the basement as well. He grabbed me by the hips and pulled me to him, "So why are we down here huh? All alone..." He muttered and began to lean down for a kiss. I quickly shoved him away from me. "What the hell Alexi? You made it seem like.."
To this I snapped. "We're down here to collect the supplies we need. What on earth were you thinking?" I used a little more attitude then I meant to but I didn't care. He's never acted like that before and I did not like it.
"I just...I...Just never mind then." He had gotten angry again now. Why he seemed to get easily angry at me I couldn't tell you. Instead of answering back I continued to gather our things. "Look I don't mean to get angry. I only wished you'd open up more to me is all." He gently cupped my face in his hands, but there is an odd coldness in his eyes. Nodding, I turned and continued to do what I was doing.
"Hey love, where is everyone?" Oh crap it's my dad. Hearing his voice I knew he had to be in the kitchen with my mom. Looking at Evan I pointed towards an uncovered window. I had thought we could put our bags there to hide. Nodding he followed me over and we both place our bags right outside of the window.
"I'm going to go up first. I'll talk to my dad and when you hear me mention knives, I want you to go up and head to my room." Walking up the steps I grabbed a knife as a cover story for being down here. "Hey dad, how'd hunting go?" Laying on the table is a huge deer. I had to give it to my dad, he's a skilled hunter.
"It went good. Got this beauty and had to reset a few traps to the north. It was animals of course, their currently outside in the freezer waiting to be gutted. I thought about having Anthony help me this time." He proudly laid a hand on the deer's antlers. I laughed when he mentioned Anthony, the boy had a weak stomach.
"It's a beaut. Goodluck with Anthony, we know he has a weak stomach. Here by the way. I was going to use the knife to practice with, but it could be good to skin the buck with." My dad nodded and took the knife. Hoping Evan got my cue to leave.
"That's a great idea, thanks. EVAN CAN YOU COME HERE PLEASE?!" My dad yelled. Couple moments later Evan strolled in with a signature smirk. "Help me take the buck outside will ya?" Nodding, they both hauled it out to the skinning area. I can't tell if my dad really wanted his help or if this is some kind of scare tactic.
Deciding not to wait on them I head up towards my room to take a nap. I need to be rested for the mission ahead. Looking at the clock it read 9:30p.m that means I only have six hours to get some sleep. We plan to leave at 3a.m so we have a low chance of encountering people. I got cozy in my bed and drifted into a dreamless sleep.
I stirred to the feeling of someone entering my bed. "Evan?" I called out. Moments later I see his face appear and relaxed. I cuddled more into him, but he seemed extremely stiff. "What's wrong? You seem off." I couldn't help the feeling of him is different. Something isn't right, I can feel it.
"I'm fine. Me and your dad just got into it. He wants me gone and away from you." I curled into him at that. I knew my dad is getting out of hand with this, but he needs to stop. He leaned down and captured my lips in a passionate kiss. Though it is our first, it just didn't seem right. "Sleep love, we only have a few more hours." To that I fell into a deep sleep.
"Alexi save me. He's not what you think. Get out of there now!" A guy that looked identical to Evan said. This must be Ethan I thought. I could see he's in what looks like chains, but why would he be?
"Ethan? Me and your brother have been looking for you." I went to remove the chains around him only for Evan to stop me. "He's your brother...why are you stopping me?"I questioned Evan. This made no sense at all.
"Alexi. That's Ethan. He has done this to me, because I wouldn't help him kill. He went after you ...I have feelings for you." If this is true then I have fallen in love with Ethan and he deceived me. Evan's eyes narrowed at my neck, "By the looks of it he has been playing me a bit too well. Do you love him?" My brain couldn't fathom what was going on anymore or why Evan or Ethan is even mad.
"Why are you mad? You both have deceived me! You are supposed to come to me Evan and you lied Ethan! I can't believe either of you." I started ranting and hadn't noticed Ethan crept up behind me.
"Ethan NOOOO!" Evan's attempts to warn me wasn't quick enough. Ethan was already on top of me with his hands on my throat. I started to scream and Evan was begging him to let me go. In my last moments I looked to Evans pained eyes and closed mine.
I shot straight up breathing really hard. Hadn't I just died? Looking around I can see I'm in my room, sighing, I realized that it was all a dream. I have a very vivid imagination, I looked over to were Evan was. The only problem is that the spot has long been empty. Getting up, I went on a search for him.
The house is eerily quiet, looking over the clock read 2:30 a.m. Another thirty minutes is when we should be leaving, but it feels off. Grabbing the knife off my night stand, I quietly got up and headed for the door. Remembering what my dad said, I slowed my heart rate and listened. Then I heard it, the soft steps in the kitchen.
I knew it wasn't my mom, I would be smelling coffee and I could hear all of their soft snores. All except Evan, the dream kept playing over and over in my head. What if this is some kind of warning, the vibe with him has felt weird and not right. This is all making sense now...but oh how I hope I'm wrong.
Entering the kitchen I came face to face with him, "Ethan?" I had to see if that dream is real or not. Watching him I noticed his back stiffen and the air around us turned cold. He turned slowly with cold eyes and a tight grip around the knife in his hands.
"I didn't expect you to be awake just yet and how do you know my brothers name? I've never told you." His tone is cold and accusing. Either he has forgotten he told me at the library or he really is Ethan. By the way he's acting I'm fearing he might be.
"I had a bad dream so I woke up. You told me. Don't you remember?" I looked to him with challenging eyes. If this Ethan then I will for sure go down fighting. His eyes focused in on my tight grip on my own blade.
He began to slowly move into a defensive position, but I can tell he is trying to do it discreetly. "What dream did you have darling? I'm guessing a nightmare since he seem so off tonight. We'll be leaving shortly." I noticed he didn't bother answering about his brother any further. Maybe he did just forget and on edge from what we may find.
"Just a nightmare, it's fine. I'm going to go get dressed and we can head out." He nodded and turned around to cutting up jerky I can now see. They must have dehydrated some already from last night. Rushing to my room quietly I pulled on the thick leggings, nike long sleeve and windbreaker, added my hiking boots, and pulled my hair up into a ponytail. As I am sliding my fith blade into my leg straps, Evan entered my room dressed similar.
Instead of wearing leggings, he had on his thick cargo pants. "Are you ready? You look hot when you dressed it literally kill." I blushed at his bold compliments. He has started doing it a lot lately I have noticed. He pulled me in for a hug and quickly peaked me on the lips, I thought it hadn't happened at all.
"Yes, let's go. We need to go through as much land as we possibly can before we encounter anyone." With that we headed out the door. We came around to the third window to the left of the house and grabbed our bags. I had backed us each two hand guns, four clips each, knives of course, and we both had a hot gun. I chose to strap the shotgun to my back, one handgun fastened around my waist and I'll carry the second. Evan how ever chose to carry his shotgun and fasten the other two around his waist.
Pulling out my map, "I think we should go in layers and ending at the school. There we should split off since the size of it is so massive." He nodded in agreement and we headed to the first house the one everyone called the "Crazy Karen". The woman is completely psycho and tormented the whole town. The woman sadly is a widower four times over with a cat named after each one.
We moved through the forest in five minutes and came across the red bricked house. It looked like a house you would see straight out of a horror story. I motioned for Evan to take the back while I took the front. We knew she probably set up traps around her house. I entered through the door and listened, strange enough the house is silent. I head no person and not even a cat. We cleared the first floor and the upstairs, all that's left is the basement.
"I'll go first just incase. You tag a little behind." I nodded at Evans plan. It's safe if he needs to pull back quickly. Opening the door we notice the light is on, this is a big sign she's down here. The basement however is empty, "There must be a trap door or moveable wall. This makes no sense." Evan is right.
We began to feel around looking for any sign of an entrance. Upon moving a bookshelf, I came across a huge hole in the wall. "Evan over here. There a huge hole in the wall." He rushed to me and jumped inside. We come across a smaller room, what looks like a safe room. "It sounds like faint screams... are they coming from the room?" I looked to Evan with wide eyes.
Nodding he looked for an electric box to open the door. "I found it, make sure your ready, we don't know what is on the other side." Nodding he snipped the blue wire and the door slowly creaked open. The sound sent eiry tingles down my spine. The screams are now louder and the pain in them echo all around us.
Slowly moving into the room, we're met with stairs going down. Quickly and carefully descending them, we have five doors to choose from. We agreed that I'll take the two on the left, Evan takes the two on the right, and we both take the fifth at the end of the hallway. I choked my gun, reading incase I need it.
Opening the door, I can see it's a jail cell. There is a ragged bed, a bucket and a little light handing in the middle. On the bed, there is a girl maybe thirteen with slashes over her whole body. Whatever is happening down here is absolutely horrible. I tried to check for a pulse, but sadly there isn't one. Moving out of the room I come to a grimm looking Evan.
"There is a young boy in there, burns all over him. It's like he was tortured." As he spoke, he gained a haunted look. I touched his arm to see if he is alright, only for him to jump back. "I'm sorry. I spaced out. What did you find in that cell?" I pointed to the room I just came out of.
I lowered my head wishing that I could get the image out of my head. "A girl around Annalise's age.... Slashes all over her body. Whatever is happening here, isn't right. The odd thing is, she couldn't have built this place in two weeks time. This may have been happening for a long time." I grew grimm a well. Realization hitting both of us.
We pushed forward to our next room. Entering, I notice this room looks exactly like the last one. This time there is a boy maybe sixteen laying on the ground. Unlike the first girl, he had bullet holes everywhere. It's like their being experimented on. Exiting I see evan, "Bullets."
He realized what I am talking about and responded. "Dismembered." My assumption might be correct. "I think their being experimented on. Four different kids, with four different ways of dying. This has to have been going on for sometime now." Nodding we head to the last room. We heard a girl scream, so Evan kicked the door in.
I immediately raised my gun and shot the cruel woman. There now laid the dead "crazy Karen". I shot because she is trying to drown a girl in a tub of water. Evan went to the girl and helped her out and I went to Karen. I fired another shot to make sure she is dead. "Come on, let's get you some food and new clothes." We went up into the main house. Evan went to the kitchen with her to get food and I went on a search for clothes.
The first room I come to held boy clothes ages eleven to seventeen. The next held infant clothes, and finally the third held girl clothes. I grabbed some leggings, long sleeve, a hoodie and boots. Coming back down, I entered the kitchen to find Evan and the girl making out. Clearing my throat I tossed the clothes to the girl, and headed to the front porch.
It hurt a lot seeing the two, but I couldn't think of that right now. I could feel the knew knowledge and sensations flowing through my body, by the feel of it Karen had killed many people. I should have known that by how much clothes there is upstairs. I must have been so wrapped up in my head, because I didn't hear Evan approach.
"Hey..." Upon hearing his voice I on reflex drew my gun on him. I let how much I am mad seep out and hoped he got the memo I wanted to be alone right now. "I'm sorry. I knew her before you and see is my girlfriend. I thought she had died when she went missing." I nodded, dismissing the conversation. I could care less at this point.
"I don't care. I'll help find your brother and then I'm gone. Okay?" He looked a bit upset with that, but I didn't care. I closed off my feelings from him and anyone. I shouldn't blame him for my hurt, but I do. I hate the girl now as well. "If she's ready then let's go." Nodding he went to go get her.
We moved on to clear the rest of the streets and It is now starting to become daylight. We agreed to camp out of a little bit and eat. "There is a grocery store right up here, we can stop there for a little bit." I announced taking the lead. The other two just followed my lead. I went through the back, so no one would see or hear us. "Sshh, there are a few in here." We drew our guns and began looking around.
Evan is the first to hoot. He took out the star quarterback, and that's when five others came out of hiding. Jenny, Evans girlfriend, Shot a little red head. I managed to shoot another and sling two blades at two boys. Evan is fist fighting with two, and Jenny went to help, but got knocked out. Wanting it to be over with, I shot both and Evan ran to Jenny. "Find some celery and break it under her nose. She'll wake up instantly." I spoke in a professional voice.
He ran off, and I went to get a drink. I'm not bothered to worry for the girl. She should have used the gun, not try to fight a guy three times her size. I hopped up on the counter drinking my Mountain Dew, while Evan began to wake her up. It's honestly comical that he has switched so much in a matter of hours. I can't help but be jealous of her, we grew close and she just came in and ruined it all. I got up and headed to the roof, I need to put as much space between us.
I could see two boys approaching the stores backdoor and hollered down. "What do you want kids?" They looked up and smiled sweetly. I could see them nod to each other and raise their guns, before they had a chance I shot both. This is starting to become easy for me to do and I didn't have any remorse. This began to scare me a little, but then again I felt emotionless.
I walked down to tell the two it's time to leave. Today must be my luck, because their back to locking lips. Faking gaging I headed for the door, I'll cover more ground without them. Exiting I am met with four angry teens. "You killed two of our friends!" A girl screamed at me. All I could do was laugh. I really am becoming a monster I thought.
"Hunny. No offense, but I've killed a lot of people. You need to be more specific than that." They all looked at me with terrified eyes. They wanted to act bad, because they had guns and in a group. These kids need to go home and let this all stop before there is no more Brookedale. "Go home kids. I don't wanna kill anymore today. I just need to find someone and leave. If you really want to be out here in this, then go train. Otherwise you'll be like a lot of other people." I spoke to them truthfully.
I really didn't want to hurt anymore people today. I can feel myself becoming a monster, and I do not like it. Half of it thought could be the heartbreak, but I'll get over it. They accepted that, but Jenny came out of the store and shot one. I raised my gun at her, taking the kids side. They were willingly leaving and she shot the kid for no reason. "They were leaving.you had no right at all to do that. What is your problem." I yelled at her. She in turn pointed the gun at me.
"If I kill you, I wonder what all I'll gain. I'm weak so I need something." I laughed straight at her. It was a dead and humorless laugh, more like a taunting one. "Don't laugh at me. I'll shoot." I just continued to laugh. She kept her word, but she missed her shot. Her eyes shone her fear when I looked at her like she is my prey.
"Has anyone ever told the little sheep not to taunt the wolf. Not even Evan could save you from me. That's why he's not intervening." I walked to her and yanked the gun from her. I handed it to the girl crying over her I'm guessing boyfriends body. "Take this. Today is not the day for revenge. If you want then you can fight it out, but I can't allow you to kill her." She pulled me into a hug and wailed.
My heart fully broke for her. She knew I wouldn't let her kill Jenny so she laid down with her love and joined him. I dropped my head feeling her pain, I turned to Jenny. "If you ever kill someone for no reason. I'll kill you. That boy and girl did nothing to deserve this." She dropped her head and ran to Evan. I hated her beyond compare to anything.
We helped the group bury their fallen friends and I gave them the gun. We now have a block left until we reached the school. The kids had warned us that the school is heavily guarded and the main killers are there. Jenny has agreed to stay with Evan and only if necessary, she'll shoot. I took the west and Evan and jenny took the east. I already spotted two guards, and put on my silencer. Two bullets later and their gone. The plan is to kill as many as we can outside and then move inside.
My count has reached five on the main floor already. I met a girl in the stairways which added six. Surprisingly, the second floor is completely empty, untilI heard the shots. Evan must not have used his silencer. I rushed there to see that they had him cornered, I began firing and took down half within minutes. "Nines, Ten, Eleven aand Twelve." I began to count out loud. Jenny looked to me bewildered.
"It's the body count I have. I've killed twelve so far..... Make that thirteen." I told her as I shot a girl trying to stab Evan. Jenny continued to look scared of me, as she really should. I feel like the realization hit her now on how many I have actually killed. The more I killed though, the more it feels like a second nature and I began to enjoy it now.
"Everything is clear. We need to hit the basement now." Evan nodded in agreement. Jenny however ran into Evan's arms scared and frankly looked like a terrified little puppy. "Jenny. I'm not going to hurt you. All I'm here to do is find Ethan." When I said that she frowned at me and went to say something, but Evan stopped her.
We made our way down to the basement and so far everything has been clear. "Do you know for sure he hasn't left town? Nevermind spoke too soon." Just then Ethan came into view. Strangely though, it looked exactly like my dream, and I couldn't help my words. "Evan?" When I said his name he lifted his eyes to me and I knew. The dream was right. I swung my gun and knocked Ethan out and Jenny. I rushed and let Evan out of his chains.
