Chapter 11: Rogue Attack!

1065 Words
Ever since feeling that strange stirring of power, Lyra carried the knowledge like a burning secret in her heart. By day, she silently performed her grueling chores, enduring the pervasive discrimination and pressure. But at night, alone, she would try again and again to recall that sensation, touching the amulet at her chest, desperate to summon that faint yet hope-filled power once more. However, the power remained elusive, like a fleeting glimpse of a bird in flight, never reappearing. The amulet remained cold, her body felt no answering warmth. This left her disappointed and anxious. Was that night truly just an illusion? If she couldn't feel it again, what good was that supposed hope? Just as Lyra wrestled with these fluctuating emotions, while also staying wary of Selena's potential retaliation, a sudden crisis exploded over War Howl Fortress like a thunderclap. It was a seemingly peaceful afternoon. Lyra and Ella were in the laundry room behind the fortress, washing mountains of clothes. Suddenly, a sharp, piercing, continuous alarm siren ripped through the air! WHOO— WHOO— WHOO— The sound was shrill and urgent, carrying an unprecedented intensity as it instantly echoed throughout the entire War Howl Fortress! "'What's happening?!'" "'It's the attack alarm! The highest level!'" "'Oh, Goddess! What's going on?'" The other servants in the laundry room instantly panicked, dropping their work, faces filled with terror and confusion. Hurried footsteps pounded outside, accompanied by the rough shouts of warriors. "'Rogues! It's a Rogue attack! They've hit the eastern warehouse district!'" "'Quick! Assemble! All combat personnel to the east sector immediately!'" "'Non-combatants, take cover immediately! Repeat! Take cover immediately!'" Rogue attack! Lyra's heart plummeted again. Rogues—wandering werewolves, those cast out from Packs or who had lost their kin for various reasons. Often rendered savage and unscrupulous by harsh living conditions, they were a constant threat to all established Packs. Like hyenas, they often attacked weak points, plundering food, supplies, and sometimes even... abducting Omegas! "'Quick! Hide!'" Ella, pale as death, grabbed Lyra's hand and pulled her towards the deepest corner of the laundry room, where some discarded barrels and clutter offered meager concealment. The surrounding servants scattered, screaming, searching for any hiding place. The entire rear section of the fortress plunged into chaos. Lyra and Ella squeezed behind a musty-smelling barrel, huddled together, listening to the growing chaos outside. The frantic pounding of feet, the clash of armor, the shing of drawn weapons, the furious bellows of commanders... all merged into a terrifying prelude to battle. "'They say... they say Rogues are terrifying... that they eat people...'" Ella whimpered, trembling like a leaf in the wind. "'Don't be ridiculous!'" Lyra snapped, though fear clawed at her own throat. She knew she couldn't afford to lose control now. "'The Iron Blood Howl Pack is strong. They'll deal with them quickly!'" Despite her words, her heart felt like it was being squeezed by an invisible fist. She remembered the competence of the Beta escorts. These warriors were undoubtedly stronger, but if Rogues dared attack here, they must be prepared and desperate. Just then, a fiercer wave of battle cries and the clang of steel erupted from the east, not far away. Even the ground seemed to tremble slightly! The fighting... had begun! Lyra's heart leaped into her throat. The laundry room wasn't far from the eastern warehouse district! Cautiously, she peered through a c***k between the barrel staves towards the source of the sounds. Distance and obstructions blurred the details, but she could see the sky flickering with bursts of what looked like energy fluctuations, and glimpsed massive dark shapes—likely warriors in their wolf forms—moving with incredible speed, colliding, tearing at each other! Combat between werewolves... far more savage and brutal than any conflict she had ever witnessed! That primal display of power and killing intent, even glimpsed fleetingly, made her scalp tingle and her stomach churn. She'd never understood so clearly just how cruel and dangerous the world she inhabited truly was. Suddenly! Piercing screams erupted, much closer this time! Immediately after, several dark figures burst into the rear service area, moving with terrifying speed! They reeked of blood and a rabid, violent energy, letting out incoherent snarls! Rogues! They've broken through the defensive line! "'Aaaah—!'" Other servants hiding nearby shrieked in terror. Lyra and Ella froze, too scared to even breathe. They could clearly see the Rogues closing in, see the greedy, bloodthirsty light in their eyes! Their target... seemed to be the defenseless Omegas and low-status servants, the easiest prey! The shadow of death had never felt so close. Lyra's body was locked by fear, her mind a complete blank. Her earlier craving for power, her hopes for the future, seemed distant and laughable in this terrifying moment. Just as Lyra thought they were doomed, several swifter shapes intercepted the Rogues from the side! Pack warriors! "'Protect the rear! Stop them!'" a furious voice roared. Fierce combat erupted just yards from their hiding spot! The sharp clang of blades, the sickening sound of claws tearing flesh, the death screams... echoed terrifyingly close. Lyra clamped her hand tightly over Ella's mouth, both huddled behind the barrel, barely daring to breathe. The close-quarters fighting seemed short-lived. Soon, the sounds outside subsided, replaced by heavy panting and curt commands. "'Clear the bodies! Check the breach!'" "'Wounded to the healers, now!'" "'Everyone else, stay alert! They might come back!'" Lyra cautiously peeked out again. Several Pack warriors were dragging away Rogue corpses, leaving shocking pools of blood on the ground. More warriors stood guard at key points, weapons ready, expressions grim. The tension remained palpable. The first wave... had been repelled. Lyra and Ella slumped behind the barrel, drenched in cold sweat. The relief of survival hadn't even set in before a deeper fear replaced it. The alarm hadn't stopped. Which meant the danger wasn't over. Were those Rogues just scouts? Where was their main force? Would they attack again? If they broke through again, right here… what could they do? Huddle like lambs waiting for s*******r by those savage Rogues? Lyra's heart sank to the abyss. An unprecedented sense of crisis, cold as a tidal wave, enveloped her. She understood with terrifying clarity now: in this world ruled by the strong devouring the weak, without power, even basic survival was a desperate hope, not a guarantee.
