"Where were you going?" Noah asks, looking at the sky.
We are at the campus of the university, finishing our cold coffees while walking around the football field -as we used to.
I clear my throat and take a deep breath, "Fairford."
"How much time will you stay here?"
"I don't know." I confess, looking at the green grass below us. "I have to make sure you're ok."
His sight lands on me with curiosity. He suddenly stops walking. "Why do you care so much?"
I turn around, still not believing that he truly remembers nothing about me.
"We were close friends. I've already told you that."
Our past might be reminisced by him one day. But I don't know if I should be the one to explain it or if I must wait for him to recover all the memories.
"I know. I ju-"
His phone interrupts him. Noah takes it out and looks at the screen.
"Do you have to go?" I ask, trying not to sound sad or jealous.
"Yeah... Do you want to join us?"
"I-I don't want to ruin any moment you and Felix would have."
He laughs, repairing a little part of my heart and drawing a smile on my lips. Only one person is capable of changing my mood. Noah can either destroy me or bring me back to life.
"I have more friends, actually. I'm sure they'll like you."
He takes my free hand after saving his phone in his pocket. We walk with a fast pace until we arrive to a cafeteria, Noah only letting go of my hand when we stop.
"Eric, he's Daniel Clarke." The blue-eyed kid says, pointing at a guy with a white mask covering his face. "You already know the others." Adds, referring to Alex Blake, Marie Nelson and Felix Avidan.
"Nice to meet you Eric." Dan says, keeping his eyes on a deck of cards he's constantly shuffling.
"Are those Yu Gi Oh cards?" I joke.
He laughs slightly. "These are tarot cards. Do you want me to read your future? I'm just learning, but it should be fun."
"N-No, thank you. Maybe later." I answer, fearful of whatever he'd tell me.
I sit by the table, next to Dan and Alex. Noah walks around us and sits next to Felix. My eyes are locked in the entrance, as far away from the couple as possible.
However, there's a point where my jealousy defeats me. I'm angry about the fact that Noah keeps pretending not to remember anything and the way he's acting. Not wanting to make a scene, I just get up, wave goodbye and say I must go with my friends.
Noah's mouth is too busy to say goodbye.
After leaving the cafeteria, I go to talk with the coordinator at his office.
It's weird how luck works. I felt lucky when I got the ticket just a couple of days ago and then felt miserable when I read the note. It's like my destiny is laughing at me. I'm just someone victim of his own fate. I'm afraid of the future because I've been harmed before. However, my life can't be so bad.
If I have the chance to keep studying in this University, there must be something good about it.
My request for leaving the school hasn't been completed because -making a sum up- the secretary was lazy enough to do it until today. I arrived just in time to revoke it, which means I can still enter classes and be the new quarterback.
I go out from the office with a smile on my face, trying my best to silence the negative thoughts and replace them with optimistic ones.
Then, I call Troy.
"Hey Eric, where are you?"
"At the campus, by the parking lot. And you?"
"In the classroom. Kevin lost his keys or something."
Kevin's excuse makes me chuckle. "Do you need my help?"
"No, we're fine. Why didn't you attend classes anyways?"
"Oh, nothing important."
"So... Do you have plans for today?"
"I have to talk with the coach, but I don't really know what I’ll do after that."
"Well, if you want to play video games, Kevin and I will be at the arcade probably all the afternoon." He says with a laugh.
"Alright, thanks. I'll call you later."
"Ok, bye."
I hang up and look around me. Again, everyone seems to be fine while I die on the inside. It doesn't matter what I think of, I always end up worrying about everything.
Mr. Sullivan spots me in the distance as I walk towards the field and walks towards me. "Ashby! I thought you were already in Fairford."
I smirk, hiding a trace of sadness. "I changed my mind."
"Well, there's still a chance for you to join the team. I was going to talk with Felix the next week, but..."
"Thanks Mr. Sullivan. Let me think about it ok?"
He sighs. "Tell me before Friday, alright?"
I nod as he palms my back and returns with the rest of the team.
A guy who's training looks at me weirdly. I think his name is James. He's a year older and is also quarterback.
He probably hates me. Or maybe I'm just overthinking everything. I could easily believe that someone is planning my murder when in reality they're just trying to remember what they have for homework or something.
Suddenly, a pair of hands cover my eyes. My heart beats faster and I can hardly breath. My legs tremble as I try to figure out what's going on. A murderer wouldn't attack me at school. He's going after a witness, why have more?
If my luck hasn't changed today, I should be safe. But who is this then?
"Noah?"
His soft giggle betrays him. I relax, taking his hands off of my face and turning around.
"You cheated." He says with a bright smile.
"No, I didn't... Why are you here?"
He sighs. "The policeman is still keeping an eye on us. I thought it would be easier for him if we went to the same place after school."
"Wow, you truly care about that policeman." I say jokingly.
"Would you rather be alone at your house with the murderer nearby? I don't think so!"
I frown. "Why have you suddenly changed your opinion about me?"
"Do you want to come to my place or not?" He says, walking backwards towards the parking lot.
After rolling my eyes, I decide to follow him. After all, we could make the police officer’s work easier.
