Chapter 6 Something for Her

1424 Words
Elena's POV ●●●● The moment I stepped into the visiting room, I found Rylan already seated and patiently waiting for me. As the female officer left without a word, I walked over to take a seat in front of him, my cuffed wrists resting on the table. Rylan fixed me with a hard glare, making me shrink back in fear. “Why did you do it?” He posed the question to me in a cold manner. I got so scared that my lips parted, yet no words came out. And while I failed to respond, he slammed his fists hard on the table, “Speak now!!! Who sent you?” “Huh…I…” My words failed me again. Before I could even realize it, he had crossed the little distance between us, clutching my orange uniform and threatening me through clenched teeth, “This is the end for you! You're dead, Elena!!! I'll kill you myself.” “Grrrr!!!! Argh!!!” I screamed as he dragged me down, my head hitting the floor hard. I didn't die right away like he wanted, but blood began to trickle from my nostrils. As if that wasn't enough, he pulled my hair roughly, letting go to squeeze my boobs. “Argh!!! Somebody help!!! Anyone please!!!” I screamed out for the umpteenth time, my loud voice prompting two male officers to rush in and hold him down. They pulled him off me too… I couldn't think straight, pushing myself up to sit upright on the floor as they led him outside. He still didn't shut the hell up anyway, “I’ll be back soon, b***h!!!” ●●●● I remained in the visiting room till now, breathing heavily while trying to imagine what my life would turn into. I am being wrongly punished for a crime I never committed, yet no one seemed to want to come to my aid. No one wants to believe that I'm innocent. “I didn't do it. I didn't kill him.” I muttered to myself, tears dripping from my eyes. Why won't anyone believe me? Why do they all see me as a criminal and his killer? “You're still here?” A voice from outside distracted me, snapping me out of my thoughts. It was the female officer who had led me in, earlier. “Well, just so you know those crocodile tears of yours won't save you. Now come. Come join the others.” She said, eyes fixed on me as I got off the floor to step out. We walked through, seeing other prisoners in the same orange uniform. While some paced restlessly, others pleaded with officers for food, a few shouted in the yard, and some simply got busy staring blankly at the walls. When we got to the cell gate, she unlocked it to shove me in. Cassidy and our cellmates were together in the cell, hugging each other for comfort. But the moment they noticed I had entered, they all stared at me. “Everything will be alright, Elena!” Cassidy alone tried to assure me. ●●●● I joined them to interact. And when we soon became hungry, I moved to take the telephone fixed to the wall. While I tapped on some digits, I put the handset close to my ear. “Hello…” An angry lady yelled at me over the line, “Yes?!!! What is it? What do you want?” The cell gate was locked, and it had to be opened for Cassidy, our cellmates, and me, so we could go to the prison canteen to have lunch. Even though I hadn't been getting proper meals, since they either serve me spoiled food, undercooked meals, or watery porridge that could make anyone sick, I have no choice but to survive on it. “What, you can't talk? Can't you see you're clearly disturbing me?” The woman hissed, about to hang up on me. But I quickly spoke before she could, “We want to go to the canteen to have lunch. But the gate is locked.” “Tell me your cell number, jailbird!” She said, “026…” After my response, she hung up. It didn't take long before one of the officers came over to open the gate for us to step out. We started making our way to the canteen. After we got in and took our seats, I noticed a group of ladies staring at me. “You seem a bit distracted, Elena.” Cassidy noticed. “Not really,” I responded. The cook here in the canteen walked over to serve us bland rice, overcooked beans, and a small portion of watery stew. Just as I picked up a fork to dig into my own food, I noticed one of the ladies rise from her seat to approach our table. My cellmates who were quick to notice her too, whispered among themselves, except Cassidy. She merely looked at her from head to toe. “Yes? What can we do for you?” She questioned her on my behalf. The lady however, turned out to be so rude, “Stay out of this. I ain't here for you.” Cassidy still didn't back down. If anything, she looked ready for a confrontation. “I think I have every right to intervene. You can't just leave your table, come over to ours, then show nothing but rudeness.” She said. “Keep your lectures to yourself. I bet you need them more than I do.” The lady's face tightened as she frowned at her. Then she looked away from her, coming closer to clutch the orange uniform on me. As she pulled me up from my seat, Cassidy stood up at once. “Get your filthy hands off her now!!!” She said, about moving closer to pull me away. But before she could even take a step, the lady had grabbed the plastic cup on the table to splash the water in it on her. “Whoa!!!” My cellmates exclaimed in shock, getting off their seats. “She's being too violent. We'll go get the officers.” One of them spoke, both hurrying away. “What did you just do? You dare splash water on me?” Cassidy was close to losing her temper. “Serves you right, you know. Didn't I tell you to stay out of this?” The lady looked at her with annoyance. Then she looked away from her to look at me, “And you…this will be your end.” She pointed her index finger at my face, almost poking me in the eye. No one in the canteen intervened. They just stared, as if enjoying the crazy drama. The lady slapped my cheek, and I cried out loudly, “Argh!!!” “Why are you doing this to her? What has she done wrong to you?” Cassidy asked her firmly, moving closer to try to pull me away. But the lady wouldn't let go. She shoved her away, causing her to drop on one of the seats at the table. “Elena, don't be a coward. Slap her back.” Cassidy advised me. And I did it. I slapped the lady on the cheek that she gasped in shock, letting go of me. Then Cassidy joined me to pounce on her. And that was it… The officers showed up… “Freeze!!!” They pointed their guns our way, starting to head over. After they separated us from the lady, we got led back into the cell, where we settled comfortably on the floor to talk. Our cellmates however, sat off to the side to simply stare at us without saying a word. “Elena? What was that about? What on earth just happened back there?” She asked, her gaze fixed on me. “I can't really tell what she was up to. I've never seen that lady before.” I responded. “Huh?!!!” She sighed on my behalf. Then we fell silent, only to be drawn by the noise coming from outside. I pushed myself off the floor to move closer to the gate, but found nothing. I turned away from the gate, barely even taking a step toward Cassidy when I heard my name. “Elena?!!!” I spun around, seeing a female officer hold out a crisp white envelope to me. “You’ve got a letter.” She said.
