Elena's POV
They were already calling me a murdurer, before the prison door slam shut.
The sound of the bell echoed off the cold concrete walls, mixing with the loud clanging of metal doors and distant shouts. I kept my head down as the officer led me through the long corridor. Every cell we passed, I felt eyes burning into me. Whispers followed behind us like shadows.
“That’s her.”
“The one who killed Captain Kade.”
My wrists ached under the tight cuffs. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, sensing danger. I tried to stay calm, but my heart was pounding hard against my ribs. I didn’t belong here. I didn’t kill anyone. But no one cared about the truth.
I had barely reached the cell when I noticed every pair of eyes on me, everyone staring as though I was the murderer they believed me to be. I looked away from them to look down at my wrists, which were having cuffs on it.
Their stares felt like knives against my skin. Some glared with open hatred, others whispered to each other while watching me like I was already convicted. I quickly looked down at the silver cuffs biting into my wrists, trying to disappear.
Before I could make sense of what was happening, the female officer had shoved me forward and into the cell. I stumbled and fell to the ground, looking up to see her swing the barred gate shut, then walk away without a second glance.
Pain shot through my knees as they hit the hard floor. I bit back a cry and slowly pushed myself up. The loud slam of the gate made me flinch. I watched the officer walk away like I was nothing. Like I was already guilty
I hadn't noticed the two female cellmates already in the cell, till one of them spoke, “Look who it is. The murderer herself.”
I looked at her and her second, both of them staring back at me coldly.
“I guess she's proud of what she did. She actually took down a whole captain.” The second said, locking eyes with me.
“I didn't kill him. I never did.” I talked back at them, clearly trying to prove my innocence.
“Lies!!!” They both chorused, pushing themselves up from the floor to move closer to me.
They stood up slowly, their eyes dark and angry. One of them cracked her knuckles while the other smiled in a way that made my stomach twist.
“You think you can just kill our captain and walk around like nothing happened?” the taller one growled.
They took another step toward me. My back hit the cold wall. My wolf growled inside me, wanting to fight, but I had no space to shift. I was trapped.
They were going to pounce on me. But the new prisoner who stepped in, made them back off. In other words, they didn't lay their filthy hands on me at all.
“Well, well, who do we have here? Looks like one of us, I guess…”With a hissing sound from one of them, they turned to walk away, sitting back down on the floor.
A tall girl with short dark hair suddenly stepped between us. She didn’t even raise her voice, but something about her made the two women stop.
“Back off,” she said calmly but firmly. “She’s new. You don’t get to touch her.”
The two cellmates hesitated, then slowly backed away with angry hisses.
“Hey, are you okay? Are you hurt? Did they do anything to you?” The new prisoner seemed caring enough.
She had seen what they were trying to do to me, so she stepped away from the gate to walk over, crouching down close to me.
“I'm fine. Thank goodness you showed up at the right time. I don't know what they would have done to me otherwise.” I said to her, offering a faint smile.
My voice came out shaky. I was still breathing fast from fear. “I’m fine… I think. Thank you. If you hadn’t come, I don’t know what would’ve happened.”
She looked at me, shifting her gaze to the same ladies in the cell with us.
Then she said to them, defending me,“Who knows? She might not be anything like you two. The fact that she ended up in the cell with you doesn't really give you the damn right to lay your filthy hands on her. You have no right to bully her whatsoever. Just so you know it's a whole different crime on its own.”
The ladies exchanged glances first, turning their attention back to us. We thought they were going to respond with the same energy, but they didn't.
Instead, their facial expressions softened with guilt.
“We're sorry!” One took it upon herself to apologize.
“Yes, we are. We're truly sorry.” The other added.
“Mhmm…” I hummed under my breath, saying nothing in response.
I stayed quiet. Their apology didn’t feel real. It felt like they were only saying it because Cassidy was watching.
“Anyways, it's all good now. I’m Cassidy, by the way.” The new prisoner introduced herself to us.
“I'm Elena…”
“Nice to meet you, Elena.”
“The pleasure is mine.” I responded.
The two cellmates soon fell asleep here in the cell, giving Cassidy and me time to talk freely.
“How did you end up here though?” She was interested in knowing.
“I was framed.” I stopped talking to catch my breath. “The whole thing started when I was…”
Cassidy leaned in slightly, her voice low. “Framed for killing Captain Kade? That’s heavy. A lot of people loved him. You’re not safe in here, you know that, right?”
I swallowed hard. “I didn’t do it. I swear.”
She studied me for a moment, then nodded slowly. “I believe you. But believing you won’t keep you alive in this place.”
We continued our conversation till the same female officer from earlier came to stand outside the gate.
“You!!!” She pointed at me. “Come here.” She gestured for me to get up to my feet and approach the gate.
I did, and while I was near, she unlocked the gate, gesturing for me to come out.
“There's someone here to see you.” She said.
“Who is it?” I asked.
“Rylan, the captain’s brother.”
