Chapter 8

1115 Words
Ava’s head pounded as she stared at Caleb, a ghost of her past who had risen from the dead. His eyes that were once filled with warmth, now burned with a vengeful fire, she could see a funny mixture of love and hate in his eyes. He had changed, hardened, and became even more ruthless than she could have ever imagined. “You still look at me like you’ve seen a ghost.” Caleb’s voice was filled with amusement, but his gaze remained the same. “I told you, Ava, I never really left.” Ava swallowed the lump in her throat. She needed to remain calm. Panic would only fuel his control over her. “Then why fake your death? Why go through all this trouble? Why leave and come back acting like it meant nothing. Like it was nothing.” “Why didn't you leave it that where? Why did you have to come back?” Caleb stepped closer, the air between them thick. “Because Ray needed to suffer. And you, Ava… you needed to understand that no matter where you run, you will always belong to me.” She clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms. “You’re insane.” His smirk widened. “Call it what you will. But I’ve spent years watching from afar, waiting for the right moment to come back. Ray took everything from me, my empire, my power, my dignity. He thought he won. But he underestimated me.” Ava’s pulse quickened. This wasn’t just about revenge. It was personal. Deeply personal. Caleb’s hatred for Ray wasn’t just about business; it was about betrayal, humiliation. And she was at the heart of it all. --- Meanwhile, Ray paced in his office, fists clenched as he stared at the ransom message on his phone. Caleb’s demand was clear—surrender his empire or lose Ava forever. His advisors stood nearby, exchanging uneasy glances. Finally, Vincent, his right-hand man, spoke up. “Sir, you know this is a trap. Caleb wants more than your empire. He wants to see you destroyed.” Ray’s jaw tightened. “I don’t care. Ava’s life is at stake.” Vincent sighed. “And if you give him what he wants, he’ll kill you both anyway.” Ray knew that. Caleb had nothing to lose. But Ray did. He had Ava. And he wasn’t going to let her slip away. A cold determination settled over him. “Then we outplay him.” Vincent’s brows furrowed. “How?” Ray turned to his team. “We find out where he’s keeping her. And when we do, we take the fight to him.” --- Back at Caleb’s lair, Ava was running out of time. She needed a way out, and fast. She studied the men guarding her, assessing their weaknesses. Caleb might have been in control, but his men weren’t as unbreakable as he thought. She locked eyes with one of them—Nathan. She remembered him from years ago, a man who once had a soft spot for her. “Still working for him, Nathan?” she asked, her voice carefully measured. “Even after everything he’s done?” Nathan hesitated for a fraction of a second, but it was enough. “He saved my life,” he muttered. She tilted her head. “Did he? Or did he just use you like he uses everyone else?” Nathan’s grip on his g*n tightened, but he said nothing. Ava knew she had planted the seed of doubt. She just needed to water it. --- Caleb returned later that night, his presence dark and brooding. “Enjoying your stay?” Ava didn’t answer. Instead, she watched him carefully. “What do you really want from me, Caleb?” He exhaled sharply, rubbing a hand down his face. “I want you to remember what we had.” She shook her head. “You don’t get to rewrite history. You left me. You faked your death and disappeared.” His eyes darkened. “I did it for us.” “No, you did it for yourself.” For the first time, she saw something flicker in his expression. Uncertainty? Pain? Regret? It was gone before she could be sure. “You’ll see, Ava,” he murmured. “You’ll understand soon enough.” Ava wasn’t waiting for understanding. She was waiting for her moment to strike. --- Ray’s team finally had a location. A secluded estate on the outskirts of the city. A fortress, well-guarded, but not impenetrable. Ray wasted no time. “We go in at dawn.” Vincent grabbed his arm. “Are you sure about this?” Ray’s eyes were cold and resolute. “I won’t lose her.” As the night stretched on, both men and monsters prepared for war. Caleb was waiting. And Ray was coming for him. --- Ava’s escape attempt came earlier than expected. When Nathan hesitated for the second time, she made her move—using the distraction to grab his g*n and knock him unconscious. But before she could slip away, Caleb’s voice rang out. “Going somewhere?” Her blood ran cold. He stood in the doorway, g*n in hand, eyes alight with amusement. “Ava,” he said smoothly, “you always were full of surprises.” Her grip tightened around the weapon. “Let me go, Caleb.” His smile never wavered. “And what kind of man would I be if I did that?” Before she could fire, the sound of an explosion rocked the walls. The cavalry had arrived. Ray was here. Caleb’s expression darkened. “Well, well. The king himself comes to die.” The final battle had begun. --- The walls trembled as Ray’s team breached the compound, gunfire erupting in every direction. Caleb’s men were well-trained, but they weren’t prepared for the sheer force of Ray’s retaliation. Ava took advantage of the chaos, slipping into the shadows. She needed to reach Ray before Caleb could use her as leverage. Her heart pounded as she maneuvered through the estate, the air thick with smoke and gunpowder. Caleb was already moving. He reached for Ava, yanking her back. “You think I’d let you go that easily?” Ava swung the g*n upward, the butt slamming into his jaw. He staggered but recovered quickly, gripping her wrist with brutal strength. “You’re mine, Ava,” he hissed. “No matter how far you run.” Ray’s voice cut through the chaos. “Let her go, Caleb.” Caleb smirked, pulling Ava closer. “Make me.” Ray’s g*n was steady. “I was hoping you’d say that.”
