CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE PRIYASince Jax left, Kara and Emery spend ALL their free time with me. They are always checking on me, like a gnat that won’t quit. It doesn’t help that time seems to slow down with each passing day. The only way to fill the time is through words, and I refuse to talk about him. “Kara, do you think this is what death feels like: the eternal suffering of the mind?” I ask. “This is the third time today you’ve asked this question,” Kara says. “I think when you die, you don’t suffer,” Emery adds. “Depends on how you die, I suppose,” I say. “Look,” Kara says, “I know this is hard for you, but you’re going to have to talk about Jax eventually.” My chest tightens. “Yeah, I know. Maybe, tomorrow? I don’t know.” I pause. “Thank you for your patience, though, and . . . “
