Chapter Three

2014 Words
“Why are you doing this again?” Hope asked, sliding into the passenger seat of my beat-down convertible. “He’s paying well and at this point, I’m not as fortunate as you are my dear friend,” Sadie answered driving out of the school’s parking lot. “Also please do not try to lecture me. You know how stubborn I get when my mind is made up.” The drive to Hope’s home was very intense because she wanted to talk Sadie out of it but then she remembered her best friend’s situation. The thought of losing one parent squeezed very vainly in my heart much less in reality to lose both. Just the thought of it made Hope feel like the car was closing in on her. “Call me if he tries anything stupid.” Hope faked a smile as Sadie pulled up in front of her house. “Will do. Love you!” Sadie responded and drove away. Not much was happening at work for Sadie today so she sat back and prepared her schedule for tutoring Simon. Grabbing her laptop she took the seat that was facing the street. Cars, students, families, and even cats and dogs seem to be having a better day than her. A black BMW came and blocked her view just as she was about to enjoy the deep happy laughter of the kids passing by and playing along the sidewalk. In the city where she grew up, kids could only play in their neighborhood under the watch of their parents, in parks or backyards because of the reckless drivers that forget about others on the road. It’s different here in “Lily Pond” you don’t have to worry about thieves, rapers, kidnappers, or any of those things. Everyone seems to live happily together except most show a bad face towards her family and she’s yet to figure out what caused that. Luckily for her and her family the few that cling to them, cling to them wholeheartedly. Even in her broken state caused by the loss of her parents and Simon she was still able to smile when she laid eyes on him. She still could not help but be in love with him, even though it was one-sided. Simon came out of the car and leaned against his black BMW staring at her. Once their eyes met they stayed locked without breaking eye contact bringing both into a world of their own. His mouth curved into that smile that melted her heart throughout her whole summer when they were working together. The same feeling was overcoming her again but before it did Simon’s girlfriend came out of the car, twisting her hair around the end of her fingers. When she caught sight of what, preferably who Simon was staring at, she planted a kiss on his lips which he returned. With a deep sigh, Sadie rolled her eyes and looked away. And in that instant, she remembered what happened between her and Hunter and why she ended things. Flashback Sadie remembered Hunter telling her he was sick so he was staying home. Being the caring and loving person she was, she spent her day video calling and ensuring he was okay until she could see him in the evening. It was odd of Hunter to be sleeping for hours so she decided to leave work a little early. After getting all of her to-dos out of the way, she buckled Kyra in her car seat to go see Hunter. Many people call Kaylee a backstabber because she chose her best friend over her brother. With that being said, right before she arrived home she got a strange message from Kaylee. Kaylee: Why didn’t you tell me you were here? I heard you upstairs with Hunter. Sadie: What are you talking about? I’m not there yet. I’ll be in your driveway in less than ten minutes. Sadie never once thought that something could be going wrong so she just shrugged and brushed it off. When she arrived at the house Kaylee was standing at the door with her hands on her hips. “You took three years to get here,” Kaylee said as they approached her. “Before we get down to business. I’m going to check on your brother to see if he’s still alive.” Sadie replied, giving her a tight hug as she entered the house. “Do me a favor and watch Kyra for me. And when I say watch her. I mean watch her.” Kaylee laughed remembering all the times she was told to watch Kyra and it turned out that Kyra was the one watching her. With a nod. She climbed the stairs up to Hunter’s room. She walked slowly to his room trying hard not to wake him if he was asleep. As she got closer to the door and opened it fully she found him far from being sick. Sadie found herself seated on his one-seat couch in his room. Her boyfriend of one and a half years was making out with his best friend. No tears came. She just sat tapping my fingers on the couch handle waiting for one of them to spot her. She sat on the couch like a predator watching its prey. From the amount of hurt she had been through, she felt numb. It ached her heart but it was nothing major to break her when she has already seen it coming. Jessie, finally turned her head when he began nuzzling her neck and her eyes popped out when she saw Sadie sitting on the couch. Pushing him off, she covered herself quickly and looked in Sadie’s direction once more. This time Hunter looked too and was lost for words when he saw her. “f**k!” Hunter cursed, staring at her. “When did you even enter my room?” “Hello, Hunter,” I smiled. “While you were busy apparently.” Jessie scrambled to get her things running outside the house like someone was chasing her. Why is she running? Sadie asked herself I’m not even gonna waste my breath or strength on her, especially when it has to do with a guy. “It’s no-” she cut him midway into his sentence. “Don’t tell me it’s not what it looks like. I wanna know why it looked like that?” she asked calmly. “I love you, Sadie,” he said, coming over to her. “That’s not what I asked Hunter. Stop testing my patience.” Sadie hissed. “Don’t touch me, Hunter, for crying out loud.” She brushed him off and with a sigh, he began blabbering like a parrot. “She was going through some rough times with Chase and when she came onto me.-” Sadie interrupted him. “But she wanted it.” He continued doing what looked like some form of explanation that was irritating her. “So she forced you and you have zero restraint of yourself? What do I look like to you? A clown?” Sadie asked, uncrossing her legs. She was still in her seated position. As expected he refused to reply. She then got up walking towards the door, not before she said all she had to. “ You know I don’t blame her. It’s you I blame,” She chuckled, shaking her head. “It was her. Why are you blaming me?” he shrugged, propping himself back on the bed. “Tell me, Hunter Pryce, can someone make you do something against your own will if you do not want to? Did she have a gun to your head? Why couldn’t you stop it?” she spat. “No. I just wanted to comfort her,” he murmured. “Talk up Hunter and stop behaving like a b***h,” she clenched her fists. “I gave you everything you could need. I always make you happy, or at least I thought I did. I didn’t know ignoring your girlfriend and cheating on her gives your best friend comfort. “I don't want her. You know that for a fact,” she replied, combing his hand through his hair. “Yes you do,” she replied. “I don’t. Who are you telling me what I want and what I don’t?” he hissed, leaning against his night table. “Yes, you do Hunter!” I yelled, ignoring everyone who was now crowding the hallway outside his room door. “You practically invited her to make a move on you. I begged you since we started dating to set boundaries, but no, you didn’t. You always said I was jealous of her, how much she’s perfect and better than me and all that s**t, and look at it now you’re cuddling in bed with her. Each time we have a disagreement you confide in her, everything was her and allowed her to disrespect me. But guess what? Now you can have her because I’m done.” “I’m sorry, Sadie.” “Save it. Honestly, I don’t wanna hear it. I blame myself for this, you two dated once, so I shouldn’t have gone out with you in the first place. So go have the perfect Jessie you boast so much about and compare me with.” “Can I make it up to you,” he begged. “I’m done. Save your sympathetic sorry. I don’t need it.” I found myself pushing through everyone, picking up Kyra, heading toward my car. And that was the end for Hunter and me. End of Flashback. When she finally returned to reality Simon was already seated in front of me with his girlfriend. “Here’s our schedule.” She handed him the piece of paper. “Must I be afraid of you?” Simon asked, looking between the paper and her. “Make sense already, will you?” Sadie replied. “How do you know my weak areas?” he asked. “Your teachers, obviously,” Sadie replied once more, rolling her eyes. “We’ll begin tomorrow since I’m not prepared at the moment.” Simon picked up the paper without uttering another word to her. And like a tail, his girlfriend followed behind flipping her long brown hair over her shoulders. It was getting late when Sadie closed the cafe. All she wanted to do now was go home, take a shower and eat. Her bed was calling her. And her body ached all over and her shoes were stained with coffee. Ensuring all the doors of the cafe were locked, she threw her spare keys in the bag that the owner gave her and began searching for the car keys. And in the moment of happening and wanting, her car broke down and she now wanted a ride. Sadie decided she was not about to sit and wait around for a passerby so she began her journey home on foot. She has been walking for over ten minutes, her brother's phone is off and no one seems to be answering her calls. As the weather news predicted, it began to rain at approximately fifteen minutes to ten. A car sped past her fastly but it was going in the opposite direction. It seemed very weird that a couple of minutes before she closed the cafe, the very same tinted car was outside the cafe parked across the street. This happened to be the fourth time in the night the car had circled the area. Sadie took her seat at the bus stop, now completely soaked when she heard a tire screeching. The tire of the black Audi that flew past her moments ago was coming to a stop. She felt her heart racing, her knees already giving way to her in her seated position. If she was supposed to run, it did not even make sense since her feet always fail her whenever she’s scared. And when the windows of the car rolled down, Sadie’s heart dropped.
