Jasper had shocked me with yet another confession, but it didn't shock me enough for me to leave him. It was probably best if I just left him, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Maybe if he hadn't followed me when I left I would have been able to leave him for good. Here I was sitting in the garden with him and actually sympathizing with his little story. It was as if I had completely forgotten about the conversation that I had heard him having with his sister. Ruth was the one who was determined to have me dead, but the fact that Jasper was entertaining that conversation should have been reason enough for me to leave him and never look back.
