Chapter 40

2084 Words
Burden, a heavy burden felt on her chest as it made her uncomfortable enough to wake. Iris eyes opened while struggling for oxygen, the mask acted like a barrier preventing her from breathing. She managed to pull out the mask with those feeble hands while she gasped loudly for breath.  Her chest felt heavy and tears rolled down her cheeks with the compression of every muscle in her body.  It was worst! She tried her best to stand knocking down the storage beside her. The carrier fell smashing few medicine containers and throwing away the pills and syringes at a fair good distance. The footsteps stopped as someone came running inside. The nurse’s eyes widened and hurried to attend her. The fear of this trouble and losing her job was terrifying. Iris struggled to keep up with her but the lower region wasn’t cooperating. The nurse held her but as she leaned to the bed in order to make her sit, they lost balance… The chaos was frightening and goosebumps occurred on the skin. Rushing to them, Derek held her just in time to prevent her fall. “I’ve got you; I’ve got you baby…” He cooed but his eyes showed how scared he was. “Call the others!” he hissed at the nurse who nodded bluntly and ran outside. There came Erik and Linda rushing only to regret. What had happened here? They weren’t that long. “Iris… Are you okay?” Linda rushed to her but they were all asked to leave by the doctor. Derek being persistent refused. It annoyed the doctor but he wasn’t here to waste his time on an arrogant ass. “What’s wrong Dr.? Is she okay?” Derek was questioning every few seconds which irked him. “Mr. Reider, PLEASE LEAVE.” The way he glared, Derek took the hint and hesitantly moved out. “Is she okay?” Erik asked whom he glared suspiciously. “I am afraid, her stitches must have pulled. We need to run some quick test but don’t worry. She is in safe hands.” An assistant came to inform them and left just as fast. They sat in silence, lost in their monologue when another person joined them. Ian wasn’t in his uniform anymore. He looked just as cool as Erik with gorgeous features. “Can I’ve a word with you?” He asked Derek but the others refused. Anything related to her was supposed to be known by them as she was their friends and not less than a family. “According to the investigation, it turns out that it was an attempt to murder.” Ian said professionally taking in the shocked look on everyone’s face. They were speechless but when none uttered a single word, he continued to inform. “The car’s tire was burst and nails were found buried in other. Regardless of the accident spot, her body was found at the other side of the road. Isn't that surprising but unfortunately, there was no CCTV installed at that road so finding that person would be difficult.” He finished when the nurse present at that time came running to Derek crying hard. She sobbed and asked for his forgiveness. “Sir, please ask the management to not fire me. My duty was over and I was heading to change my clothes when I heard a loud crash. Rushing inside, I found the patient struggling to breathe. I noticed that someone must have cut the oxygen supply to have caused this and since the monitor was turned off, it didn’t alert anyone around…” She sobbed still begging him. Everyone else peered at each other worriedly. Who was behind all these? First, her accident and then this attack. Derek’s fists clenched as he waved his hands in dismissal. The nurse still confused dared not ask if he would do as she requested and left sobbing. Derek called the management HOD and asked a reason for their staff’s carelessness. The HOD was ashamed and didn’t try to cover up. He apologized and decided to have a word with others but Derek cared less. His focus was to find who could be so reckless to fight him. But the most important thing right now was to avoid the involvement of the media. *** The news reached to Aiden who yelled like a wounded animal. First his deal and then Iris; someone was unaware of the consequences of their actions. He was walking towards her room when a nurse walked out and dashed into him. “So-sorry.” She mumbled but Aiden didn’t notice anything. He rushed inside and saw Iris awake, watching him as she passed him a week smile. He ran to her and embraced her making her groan in pain. “How are you, love?” He questioned scrutinizing her from head to toe. The concern was evident and hearing that endearment, she felt guilty not being able to look him in the eyes. “Strong!” she said lowly and Aiden chuckled. “You bet!” he said mocking her. He had thought he would kill anyone trying to harm her and was in a rage but seeing her sitting alive, calmed him. “So, you’re classes are resuming from over-morrow. Are you ready?” He said restraining his smirk. “Holy Jesus!” Iris panicked! How could she be so forgetful? She needed to submit a thesis she had been working but it was still unfinished. It wasn’t a problem but three-page assignment was indeed a problem for her. “Hey, you can’t go right now remember?” He said concerned. “But I’ve got unfinished task…” She made a face which reminded him of a child not getting his favorite toy. He laughed lightly as Iris glared at him. Clearing his throat, he offered “Let me help you then.” Iris considered it for a moment, it was tempting offer but it would be a cheating as well. Should she be doing that? Does it matter? She knew her work well. “Okay” She agreed to which Aiden was shocked. This little bad girl… Surely she has changed. “You know what I’d been working as right?” she asked little worried. “No!” he said sarcastically which made her roll her eyes. She had recovered after three days of full rest and now was fit to go home. It could’ve been sooner but her bleeding started again after that little incident. Aiden had pestered Derek to take her home with him because according to him he doubts his security. Coming back to his apartment was little weird but she knew it will take some time for her to adjust. She exited the car without his aid and Aiden frowned. He rushed towards her as she took few steps to the front gate. “Here… I don’t remember asking you to walk.” He said scowling at her. Before she could’ve answered him, he scooped her up in his arms and carrying inside the apartment. “Hey!” She protested but he was still angry. Is she trying to escape me? Does she think it is that easy? While for Iris, this closeness was dangerous. Her body couldn’t help but react to his and produced those unwanted sensations that she has forgotten long back. Aiden was determined to make her his and confess her feelings for him, it will be sooner or letter when she will give herself to him; all of her. He placed her on couch and removed his jacket. Iris stole a glance at him. His hair was messy and face strained. It appeared that he hasn’t slept well from past few days and she knew she was the reason; both for professional and personal life. She sighed and decided to cook something for him. He left without a word and headed towards his bedroom. She sized this opportunity and went ahead. It had still been aching but she was bored confined to one space. Opening the fridge she found some asparagus and few veggies, also some canned beans and thinking what she could do with these, she settled to cook Three Bean chilli, more likely Balila along with apple and blue cheese salad. As she finished serving, she decided to shower first. Pleased with herself she turned only to find Aiden leaning on the counter watching her with unreadable expressions. “I-I…” She was nervous not knowing what excuse she could throw right now but Aiden cared less. He had been watching her from past few minutes and was happy to see her cook for him excitedly. She looked carefree like her old-self and couldn’t help but wish to live this moment forever. Aiden was topless only in his sweatpants and the hair wet. She tried to focus elsewhere than those dark eyes staring intently at her. Her eyes settled on the drops of water that was hanging at the tip of his hair. She relaxed watching it fall from his hair straight on his hair-less chest. It rolled down to his taut stomach caressing every inch of his skin. Only now she realized how sexy he was. The drop finally disappeared near his waistline as she felt the same excitement in her lower region. Involuntarily, her tongue wetted her lips and Aiden c****d an eyebrow at her. Following her gaze he saw she had been drooling over his fit and muscular body. He smirked and decided to tease her a little. Closing the distance between them, he reached her just an inch apart. Her heart raced like winning gold in Olympic marathon. She did her best to stay calm but Aiden’s manly scent clouded her senses. She stepped back only to realize that she was caged between the counter and him. He leaned forward and she closed her eyes in anticipation of the obvious. He leaned down a little and closer to her ear, she was sure now that he could hear her heart thudding against her chest. Automatically, her palm rested on her heart trying to calm it but failed when she felt his hot breath near her ear. Aiden thought he was teasing her but with this close to her and inhaling her familiar scent; he couldn’t stop himself from groaning but quickly muffled it. His hands rested on her hips as he teasingly caressed it. She shuddered and he smiled knowing his effect. She leaned a little into him and felt her breathing erratically. Gosh! Only if she could submit her to him. Not wanting to take this torture anymore, he intentionally breathed on her neck as she held his shoulder firmly. He stifled his laugh although he was losing himself in this but then brought his mouth close to her ears enough to brush it accidently. She moaned and he was proud of himself. “Can you…” he whispered as she nodded her head frantically. “Please step aside?” He side biting his lips to prevent from laughing. “Yes…” she answered with hoarse voice and it tugged his nerve in the wrong place. He pulled apart and she stared at him with confusion. He was enjoying the mess he made of her and after a moment of confusion, she realized what had happened. Aiden laughed wildly and she was too embarrassed of herself. Cursing herself inwardly, she pushed him aside and left. He was too busy laughing and when she was at a good distance he ran behind her because the doctors asked her to avoid the stairs for few days. He gripped her wrist and stopped her but she wasn’t letting him to touch and play with her again. She thought he would be laughing at her stupidity, she must have looked like a desperate woman but she wasn’t aware that Aiden loved her hue-colored face. She was beautiful as always and he loved teasing her. She was innocent and he had planned to bully her every day.
