Chapter two

1095 Words
LAURYN’S POV I sat at the corner of the diner, drinking my coffee as mom’s big “announcement” didn’t let me enjoy mine earlier. The strong smell of coffee hit my nose. I think I might just spend the night at Bryan’s because I can’t seem to face my mom. I dialed Bryan again, still no response. My body still ached from the double shift and I couldn’t feel my toes anymore. My stomach growled from hunger but I ignored it and rather focused on the coffee before me. My stomach growled again, this time louder, my feet throbbing in my worn sneakers, but the knot in my stomach had nothing to do with hunger. I’d ordered coffee and scrambled eggs anyway, just to have something to do with my hands. I pulled out my phone and texted Bryan. It’s odd for him not to return my calls. I quickly rushed the remaining eggs to quiet down the worms, at least my stomach would stop making embarrassing sounds. I grabbed my bag and made my way out. Bryan hated how hard I work and for some weird reason, we’ve been fighting a lot lately. We’ve been through so much ever since my dad died, he has been the one who helped me stay sane…“my high school lover”. But now, I might just surprise him at his apartment which is a ten-minute walk from the diner. He was the best person to talk to now. I got to his block and took the endless stairs upstairs. I opened the door with my spare and tiptoed into his dark apartment, the curtains were drawn tight making it difficult to proceed. I kicked off my shoes and sighed at the instant relief my toes felt. The familiar scent of something flowery attacked my nose as I walked closer to the bedroom. I twisted the knob and gently stepped in. “Bryan…oh f**k, Bryan yes there…” the girl moaned from underneath Bryan. My legs turned to jelly immediately, and cold sweat rushed from my neck down my spine. I couldn’t think and suddenly lost the ability to breathe. It felt like I was falling but I steadied myself against the door, slamming it in the process. That was when my cheater of a boyfriend decided to say “hi” “Oh my God, no Laurie…no no no, it’s not what you think babe” Bryan shot from the bed trying to scramble into some clothes.. “How long Bryan, how long…” I yelled at the top of my voice. How long have you been cheating on me with her, do you even love me, Bryan? I yelled “Bryan honey, is this the loser you were talking about?” “Would you shut it, Erica, Now isn’t the time please” Bryan fired back. “Laurie love, listen to me,” he held my hand trying to convince me. “I don’t know how it happened baby, she tricked me, sh…she drugged me. Baby listen to me please…” he said trying to reach for my arms. “Go to hell Bryan…your broke miserable ass suck” the girl said and stormed away. “And girl, he said you f**k like an amateur,” tears streamed down my cheeks. “He calls you fat….” “Shut up, just shut it…you’re making this worse” “He comes to me when he needs someone to ride his c**k…and girl, we should have a threesome, I could teach you all you need to know about driving a man crazy and making him stay faithful.” She said, twirling my hair in her fingers before she walked away. I stood “Bryan, how could you do this to me, I trusted you. Why did you hurt me?” “Laurie, it was a big mistake. I swear…just a one-time thing” he said as I tried to walk away. “Don’t f*****g touch me…” I yelled, walking out of the room. He chased after me and stood in front of me still pleading and trying to wipe my tears. “Don’t go please,” “It’s over Bryan…” I said before storming out. “I love you Laurie” he yelled after me. I wiped the tears from my eyes while making my way home. My mom and Bryan are the only people I have in this city; no friends or enemies. I casually strolled down the streets looking dejected and finished. My phone kept ringing. Several notifications from Bryan begging me popped up and I ignored them all. I was a few blocks from my apartment when another call from an unknown caller came in. I sniffed and wiped my tears before picking up. “Laurie here,” I said, sounding hoarse. “Hello, I’m calling from Evergreen hospital, your mum was brought in, Mrs. Penelope McCarthy…she just attempted suicide. We need you immediately ,” “What? Oh my God! " I’m on my way please, I’ll be right there” my voice started shaking. “Oh no no, mom no…please, God please” I whispered in the taxi. Gosh, I shouldn’t have yelled or gotten into a fight with her. “Mom please,” I kept on praying. I should have just given her my blessings, should have just let her be with who she wants to be with. I can’t bear the pain of losing another parent. I quickly paid the taxi and ran straight to the reception. I was shown her room and was informed that her bill has been cleared by one Arlo Matteo; her soon-to-be husband I guess. “Mom…” I said, bursting into her room. “Am I that terrible?” I said, in tears. “No baby, I’m so sorry” she grabbed my shoulders trying to get up. “No remain still, you can marry Arlo, you have my full support. I’m sorry for being immature and insensitive and selfish and…mum, I don’t want to lose you,” I hugged her, unable to control my tears. “ I’m sorry for calling you a selfish baby.” She said against my neck. “ I was selfish, if Arlo makes you happy, then it’s fine. All I want is your happiness, Mom,” I pulled her tighter. “Thank you Laurie, when I get discharged, we’ll start packing,” she said, wiping my eyes. “Yahhh….Tuscany isn’t ready for Lauryn and Penelope” We burst into laughter as I lay beside her.
