The alley was a trap.
Silver glinted in every direction—nets, guns, darts c****d and ready. Floodlights blazed down from armored vans, bleaching the night into sterile white. Shadows of hunters stretched long against the walls, their boots pounding closer, boxing them in.
And at their center stood Elara, pressed against the brick, her wolf trembling beneath her skin, caught between the protective fury of an Alpha and the icy command of a man she once trusted.
Her pulse thundered, each beat louder than the last.
Colton lifted a gloved hand, his weapon steady in the other. “Stand down, Kaelen. This doesn’t concern you.”
Kaelen’s growl rumbled deep, his eyes blazing gold. “You point a weapon at her, it concerns me.”
The bond between them pulsed like a storm, thick and suffocating. Elara’s chest ached as her wolf strained toward him, drawn to his dominance, his protection. But her human side trembled. Because she knew Colton. She knew the Unit.
And she knew what they wanted her for.
“Elara.” Colton’s voice softened, though the steel never left his gaze. “Come now. Don’t force me to hurt him.”
Her stomach twisted. “Don’t pretend this is about protecting me.”
His jaw ticked, just barely. “You don’t belong with wolves.”
“She is a wolf,” Kaelen snapped, stepping forward. His Alpha aura surged, making even the nearest hunters falter for a second under the weight of it. “And she’s mine.”
The word hit Elara like a physical blow. Mine. Her wolf shivered, submitting instinctively, heat curling low in her belly.
But the claim was a chain too, and chains always broke.
“Stop it!” she shouted, the air crackling around her. “Both of you. You don’t get to decide who I belong to.”
The floodlights flickered. A pulse of white heat surged under her skin, unbidden, dangerous. Kaelen stiffened beside her, sensing it. Colton’s eyes narrowed, his weapon tilting higher.
“She’s manifesting,” one of the hunters hissed.
“Not possible,” another muttered. “The White Wolf is a myth.”
Elara’s heart seized. The words hung in the air like a curse.
The first dart flew.
Kaelen lunged, knocking it aside midair with a swipe of his claws. The hunters opened fire, silver screaming through the night. He moved like a shadow, fast, brutal, batting projectiles aside, tearing through nets before they could ensnare them.
“Elara—run!” he roared.
But her legs wouldn’t move. The light inside her built higher, hotter, clawing to get free.
A dart cut past Kaelen’s guard, slicing across her arm. Silver burned her skin, sizzling black. She cried out, dropping to her knees.
And the power broke loose.
Light exploded from her body, blinding, searing, wild. It wasn’t just healing this time—it was raw force, a wave of white fire that shot outward in every direction.
Hunters screamed as weapons melted in their hands. Nets disintegrated midair, reduced to ash. Floodlights burst in showers of sparks.
Kaelen shielded her instinctively, his body crouched over hers, but even he was forced back a step by the sheer intensity of it. His eyes widened, golden and awestruck.
“Elara,” he breathed, voice rough with wonder and fear.
When the light dimmed, the alley was scorched. The hunters stumbled, disarmed, retreating with terror etched into their faces. But Colton stood firm, though his jaw was tight, his weapon still raised.
“You can’t hide it anymore,” he said coldly. “You are the prophecy.”
Elara’s blood froze.
Kaelen’s head snapped toward her, shock flashing in his eyes. “What prophecy?”
Her throat closed. She couldn’t—she couldn’t tell him here.
Colton’s gaze flicked between them, his lips curling. “Didn’t tell him, did you? Smart. Because once he knows what you are, he’ll use you just like everyone else.”
“That’s enough,” Kaelen snarled, his wolf rising.
But Colton only steadied his aim. “You can’t protect her, Alpha. You don’t understand what she is.”
Elara’s chest heaved. The world tilted, spinning, her veins still burning from the light. She staggered to her feet, her body trembling.
“I’m not—” Her voice cracked. “I’m not your weapon. I’m not your prize. I’m just—”
Her words were cut short by the c***k of a gunshot.
Kaelen moved faster than thought, shoving her back against the wall, his body covering hers completely. The bullet struck his shoulder with a sickening thud.
He snarled, teeth bared, but didn’t falter. Blood seeped through his shirt, silver smoke curling from the wound.
“Kaelen!” Her hands pressed against his chest instinctively, panic and fury tangling in her veins.
He winced but forced a grin. “Still breathing.”
Her wolf keened, torn between rage and fear. And the bond roared louder than ever, demanding she protect him the way he had protected her.
Her hands glowed faintly white. She didn’t think—she just pressed harder against his wound. The silver hissed, burning away, until the flesh knitted whole beneath her touch.
Kaelen’s eyes widened. His lips parted, a growl caught in his throat.
“You…” His voice was reverent, disbelieving. “You healed me.”
The hunters were regrouping. Colton’s face was carved from stone, his weapon lowering just slightly, as though her display had confirmed something he already suspected.
“You’ll burn this world down, Elara,” he said, voice soft now, almost sorrowful. “If you don’t come with us, you’ll doom us all.”
Kaelen stepped in front of her, shielding her once again. His voice was a snarl, deadly and final. “Over my dead body.”
The bond thrummed between them, no longer a chain but a lifeline. Elara clutched Kaelen’s arm, trembling, her heart torn between past and present, fear and longing.
Because Colton was right about one thing.
The power inside her was growing.
And sooner or later, it would destroy everything.
