Adrian asked me out for the weekend, but I turned him down, saying I had to work overtime at the office. Then I did my full makeup and headed out.
The room I booked had a small private hot spring pool in the yard, plenty of room for two people to soak comfortably.
That evening, I changed into a bathrobe and got into the pool first.
While waiting for Owen, my feelings shifted. I started out nervous, but later found myself wanting to back out entirely.
Just as I was about to climb out, my phone pinged with a text from Owen. With only two words.
Owen: Wait for me.
I settled back down.
I'd give him another half hour. If he still didn't show up by then, I'd leave.
I wanted to get back at Adrian, but I wasn't such a doormat that I'd throw myself at someone just to get stood up. I wasn't about to embarrass myself like that.
I closed my eyes and leaned against the pool edge.
Suddenly, the water rippled.
Owen stepped straight into the pool just as he was, wearing a white shirt and black pants.
When he smiled, one small canine tooth showed, softening his roguish, devil-may-care charm.
At that moment, he didn't seem like the fierce "Little Wolf Dog" everyone called him. He looked more like a sweet, eager little puppy, especially when he kept saying my name, over and over.
"Mandy, something came up and held me up."
"It's okay."
I could feel my cheeks warm up. I felt awkward and unsure how to act, so I spoke just to break the silence. "Why didn't you change into a bathrobe?"
"I was afraid you'd get tired of waiting, Mandy."
"Pfft. I wasn't."
He said nothing more, just sat across from me, his dark, bright almond eyes fixed intently on me.
It was then I realized that when this man looks at you, his gaze feels so full of warmth and affection.
"Mandy... you asked me here just to sit in a pool and chat?"
He looked at me, teasing, and I swallowed hard.
Slowly I stood up and walked over to him.
Under his watchful gaze, I settled sideways on his lap, wrapping both arms around his neck.
Owen didn't pull away, not once. I let out a quiet breath of relief.
Of course. If he'd wanted to turn me down, he never would have come tonight.
I could clearly feel the heat radiating beneath me.
True enough, he lived up to that "Little Wolf Dog" reputation.
Owen's long, pale fingers drifted down to my leg. With a light flick of his fingertip, he tugged open the edge of my bathrobe... but then he didn't move further, not for a long time.
He ran his hand slowly up my calf, like he was taking his time admiring something precious.
It felt light, almost ticklish, and I found myself urging him again, "Hurry up."
This slow teasing was making me restless. At this pace, we'd get nowhere all night.
The corners of his eyes lifted in that familiar, warm curve, and he teased back, "Mandy... are you really that impatient?"
For a second I thought he was mocking me. I started to push him away, but then his fingers slipped right under my robe.
"Mm..."
I was caught completely off guard. My knees went weak, and I sank right against him.
