I stepped out onto the balcony just in time to spot Owen leaning against the railing on the floor below, smoking. Even from up here, he looked quiet and worn out, like something had worn him thin. 'Poor thing... he looks kind of miserable. Just like a sad little puppy.' I picked up my phone and typed out a message. Mandy: I was too sharp with you just now. I'm sorry. He pulled his phone out, glanced at the screen, but didn't type anything back. I frowned and sent another one. Wendy: Go easy on the cigarettes, okay? He read that one too, but just stuffed his phone back into his pocket, acting like I hadn't said a word. All at once, irritation pricked at me. I hate this back-and-forth, hot-and-cold way we keep acting around each other. I pulled my clothes back on, headed downstairs
