Chapter 28 ShannonI didn’t get back to my new apartment until nearly midnight. I stepped in the door, and the place was dark, but not empty. I heard Kid—or so I assumed—knocking around in the back bedroom. I’d asked him to smoke outside, but of course, the air stank of cigarettes. I fumbled on the wall for the light switch, but things were still so unfamiliar, I stepped to my right, feeling along the wall. My foot slammed into a solid object on the floor. It felt like a boulder. “Dammit!” I screamed. I lurched forward and braced myself, one hand coming down on the floor and the other on a beer can, now crushed. Heaving myself up and standing on one leg, I hopped along the wall. Finally, the light switch. I looked down at a stack of weight plates on the floor. More stuff. Kid kept movin
