Kerri appeared at Mona’s side, coffeepot in hand. She raised her eyebrows to ask if Mona wanted another. “Please.” Mona held up the cup and murmured a thank-you as Kerri filled it. She’d been back at work for only two days, but she’d fallen into the routine as if it was second nature. Mona supposed it was. The only difference between the Kerri she’d met months ago at the beginning of the spring semester was that this one smiled at her a bit more and now had to wear longer sleeves as her arm healed. Her burn was better, for the most part, but there was a latticework of red wounds that would soon be scars over her elbow and arm. Roy, too, was back at work, though he had a stool brought to the kitchen so he could sit when his leg pained him. He had waved at Mona as she came into the diner.
