The Kane mansion felt eerily quiet as I walked through the front doors, my footsteps echoing in the marble foyer. The silence was almost oppressive, reminding me how alone I was in this massive house. I pulled out my phone, hoping for a message from my mother, and found exactly what I'd been dreading.
Her contact photo smiled back at me from the screen as I read her text: Sweetheart, Richard and I decided to extend our trip for a few more days. The mountains are beautiful this time of year. Hope you're getting along well with the boys! Love you.
