The door creaked open, and harsh light spilled into the small room where I’d spent what felt like an eternity. My wrists were still sore from the ropes that had bound them, but the restraints had been removed hours ago—perhaps more. Time had become a blur in this place.
Alessandro stood in the doorway, his tall figure cutting an imposing silhouette. His eyes, cold and calculating, scanned the room before settling on me.
“It’s time to move,” he said, his voice as smooth as ever, betraying none of the emotions simmering beneath the surface.
I stood slowly, brushing off the dust that had gathered on my clothes. “Move where?” I asked, though I knew better than to expect a straight answer from him.
His lips curled into a faint, humorless smile. “To the main house, where you’ll be staying.”
I glanced around the dim room one last time before following him out into the hallway. Alessandro’s men flanked us as we walked, their silent presence a constant reminder of my captivity. The mansion was just as I’d imagined—cold, imposing, with every inch designed to project power and control. The walls were lined with dark wood paneling, and the floors were a glossy black marble that reflected the sparse light. The air was thick with the scent of expensive cologne and polished wood, a scent that seemed to cling to Alessandro himself.
“So this is your little kingdom,” I said, my voice laced with sarcasm as we walked through the grand entrance hall.
Alessandro didn’t bother looking at me. “You could call it that.”
We reached the base of a grand staircase that spiraled up to the second floor. I knew this was my chance, however slim it might be. I had studied his movements earlier, noted how he carried himself with that confident, almost arrogant air. It was clear he underestimated me. Perhaps I could use that to my advantage.
“After you,” Alessandro said, motioning towards the staircase.
I hesitated for only a moment before starting up the stairs, noting the plush carpeting beneath my feet. As we ascended, I ran scenarios in my mind. I had to act quickly, with precision. There wouldn’t be another chance.
When we reached the top, Alessandro stepped ahead of me, guiding me down a long corridor. I glanced at the windows lining the hall, calculating the distance to the ground outside. If I could just make it to one of them…
As we passed by a set of double doors, I slowed my pace, pretending to stumble on the carpet. Alessandro barely glanced back, clearly thinking nothing of it. That was his mistake.
In one swift motion, I darted forward, pushing against the door to my left with all my strength. It swung open with a loud crash, and I was through it before Alessandro could react. I ran towards the window, my heart pounding as I threw it open. The cold night air hit my face like a slap, but I didn’t hesitate. I gripped the edge of the window frame and hoisted myself up, ready to leap into the darkness.
But before I could, a strong hand clamped around my ankle, yanking me back with brutal force. I hit the floor hard, the wind knocked out of me as Alessandro’s furious face loomed above mine.
“Did you really think you could outsmart me, Elena?” His voice was cold, but there was an edge of anger there now.
I glared up at him, refusing to show any pain. “It was worth a shot.”
He hauled me to my feet, his grip like iron as he dragged me back into the hallway. I struggled against him, but he was too strong. I cursed inwardly, knowing I had underestimated him.
Alessandro didn’t say another word as he led me to a room at the end of the corridor. He shoved the door open and pushed me inside. The room was large, luxurious even, with a massive bed dominating the space and floor-to-ceiling windows that offered a breathtaking view of the estate. It was a cage, albeit a gilded one.
“This is where you’ll stay,” Alessandro said, his tone leaving no room for argument. “Don’t try anything stupid again, Elena. I won’t be so lenient next time.”
I met his gaze, my eyes hard. “I wasn’t aware you were being lenient.”
He stepped closer, so close I could feel the heat radiating from his body. “I am. But don’t test me. You won’t like what happens if you do.”
The threat hung in the air between us, thick and suffocating. But I didn’t flinch. I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.
“Goodnight, Elena,” Alessandro said finally, turning on his heel and leaving the room. The door clicked shut behind him, and I heard the unmistakable sound of a lock sliding into place.
I let out a shaky breath, my heart still racing. I had failed, but I wasn’t done. Not by a long shot. I walked over to the windows, looking out at the vast expanse of Alessandro’s estate. The lights from the grounds were faint, twinkling in the distance like stars. Beyond that, nothing but darkness.
I turned away from the window, assessing the room. My mind raced, analyzing every detail—the distance from the door to the bed, the placement of the furniture, the potential weapons I could use if it came to that. I wasn’t a stranger to this game of power and control. My father had taught me well, and I had picked up a few skills along the way. Skills I had just begun to show Alessandro.
I walked over to the nightstand, opening the drawer to find nothing but a Bible and a lamp switch. I smirked, closing it softly. Alessandro thought he had me trapped, but he had no idea who he was dealing with. This was his world, yes, but I was more than just a pawn in his game.
My hand brushed against the edge of the bed frame, my fingers trailing along the wood. I glanced around once more, committing everything to memory. If I was going to survive this, I needed to be smart, patient, and above all, cunning. There was always a way out. Always.
I climbed onto the bed, not to sleep, but to plan. The moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting long shadows across the room. It was quiet now, almost peaceful, but I knew that was just an illusion. The real game had only just begun, and I was ready to play.
For now, I would bide my time, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Alessandro may have won this round, but the war was far from over.
And I had every intention of winning.
