Chapter Two

770 Words
Evie’s POV As the receptionist left he finally opened a folder. Curiously, I waited wondering what is inside. “So, Miss Snow, as you may be aware this is a contract meeting and to discuss the late arrival and how we aim to achieve the best in you in shorter time. Before we start any concerns,” he was blunt almost cold. His deep voice vibrated against the glass box as I thought about my answer. “No concerns sir, I’m dedicated and I’ll make up for lost time as much as possible if you wish me to,” for goodness sake why have I all of a sudden gone to sounding like a nervous child. This is not what I need right now. “Good. I like my team to be the best of the best without hesitation. We’ll start with the hard stuff. Any explanation to why you have started a month late? Normally I wouldn’t allow it but the staff in HR who reviewed your application was astounded with your work and convinced me. Can I expect the same level of work to be consistent?” Gosh he was riding my ass about this but can I blame him? “I would prefer not to disclose my reasoning sir as it’s personal. One thing I can ensure is my work ethic and level of standard within my work will always be 100% consistent no doubts about that,” finally my voice wasn’t shaking. Bailey was right. “Good and that’s understandable if you prefer not to disclose. So, next is the contract. I expect all interns to be here 9am until 5pm Monday to Friday. Every intern has a publisher they answer to. Since you’ve started late I’m thinking of who to pair you up with as it’s usually the junior editors I assign intern to but you will have a senior editor I just need to make him aware. Uniform is professional business attire. Skirt or trousers I just ask that skirts aren’t too short. Dress same rules not too short. Tights to be worn with skirts and dresses. Blouses no t shirts nothing too low cut and if needing a jacket I ask it to be a formal jacket. Pay rates for interns is £12 an hour. All other policies and procedures are in this booklet do you want me to read them to you or are you capable enough to read them yourself?” Gosh how stupid does he think I am. Can I read them myself? Not realising I did so, I rolled my eyes as I answered “yes, I can read them myself.” Suddenly I see his expression change from cold and blunt to slight amusement. “Thank god for that, last thing I wanted to do on a Monday morning was to read i***t proof policies out loud. Although, roll your eyes at me again and we will have a very different conversation.” His tone grew darker as the last of his words came out of him. I gulped heavily and apologised quickly. “So, ready to sign Miss Snow? If you sign you go home today and start 9am tomorrow. Since you don’t have anyone to shadow at current, tomorrow you will shadow me. Understood?” I look at him shocked. Shadowing the boss is the worst way this could go. He’s gonna be watching me like a hawk all day. That’s going to be a very long and drawn out day. I nod and pick up the pen off of his desk and sign where designated. “Thank you for this opportunity sir. Also I haven’t said but thank you for allowing me start late I really do appreciate it,” quickly I spoke hoping to not have my voice fail me. “You’re welcome Miss Snow. Now, dismissed and I expect you here at my office 9am sharp.” He stated, his voice low and commanding. Damn why was that attractive. “Yes Mr Wolfe.” I acknowledged his command and he came with me to the door, opening it for me. As I took a step out of his office he shakes my hand and comments “Welcome to the team Miss Snow.” I give him a nod as I ridiculously flush. His hands were warm and large, they buried mine even in just handshake. Bloody hell, why all these random musings appearing now. After the brief handshake and comments he went back into his office closing the door. Time to head home and see if Bailey is available for a girls night.
