Chapter Three

1190 Words
Mr Wolfe’s POV As I walked back in to my office to get some more of the paperwork sorted I feel my body stiffen with uncertainty. There’s something about that woman. I resume my seat and start thinking. She’s reserved, appearing shy, but underneath? Quietly confident. Here answers were concise and structured but also vague. I wonder what happened for her to delay her start. Must’ve been something big since this is a prestigious internship I offer. Nothing short of perfection I will accept in my building. I started this company from the ground with my family’s money. I’m a lucky man in some ways. However, to say I wasn’t impressed with the delayed start, in which of course meant that the review of manuscripts got behind in my junior department, she somehow managed to impress me today. She hasn’t even done anything to, but I saw her report from her application, impeccable. The attention to detail was awe inspiring and I have never come across someone in my whole 15 years of having this company in the structure it is, write me a report on a manuscript like that. Then I realise. I haven’t even started my paperwork since sitting down. The first thing I see is the contract. Her hand writing was perfect mix of neat and efficience. Just what I like. Someone who can make it legible but fast enough to take quick notes. That’ll do her good in meetings. Signing off her contract I email my PA to come collect it to deliver it to HR. Amelia is good at her job, but will sometimes get involved with gossip. I don’t believe in gossip. In my eyes, say it to people’s face rather than behind their back. If you can’t say it to their face then don’t say it behind their backs. A few moments later Amelia knocks at my door vigorously. I roll my eyes. I find her knock annoying but at least my diary is always organised I guess. When I tell her to enter she sways in, her hips moving side to side and her heels clicking against the tiles. Bleached blonde hair cascades down her shoulders, a knee length black dress which is always tight to push up her barely there chest. She is a walking stick but likes to think otherwise. She’s always trying to try it on but I always ignore it. I have no interest in a woman. As she gets to my desk I pass her the enclosed folder and command “get this to Lauren now so she can add her to the security system and car park. I want notified when this is done.” “Yes Mr Wolfe. Would you like a coffee also?” She obediently answers me back batting her eyelashes trying to portray some innocent heroine. “My usual. Black and strong.” I can be blunt but I’ve had enough of this conversation now. She walks out and does as I ask and returns 10 minutes later with a coffee and leaves without a word. Best way. A few hours from that moment I receive a notification from Lauren, my head of HR. She has emailed Evangeline the code for the car park and sent a picture of Evangeline over to security also. I reply a with a brisk email confirming my acknowledgment of the prior email. Then carry on for a few more hours. Still, even at the end of my work day she is on my mind and I can’t pin point why. Was it her demeanour? Her intelligence? God knows but I need to put it behind me. I decide to call my friend maybe he can be a distraction for the evening. I stand from my desk locking my computers before exiting my office and heading down to my vehicle getting nods from everyone I walk past. The Audi springs to life as I unlock the driver’s side door and sit comfortably for a second before calling my best friend of 20 years, Matteo. He answers immediately “Ciao! Fratello, what brings this call on?” He’s always so straight to the point, which I like. He’s basically a slightly more bubbly version of me. Still a big broody bastard mind you. “Care to distract me for the evening. Busy day at the office,” I vaguely answer. He’s gonna know it was vague but I know he won’t push it. “Of course I’m at the restaurant come let me feed you.” “Thanks brother.” I end the call and start my engine. In all fairness I’m excited now even though I don’t show it on the outside. Matteo owns a very well known busy Italian restaurant called ‘Bianchi’s’ it’s really good and he’s done well. He’ll already know what I want so he’ll have it ready with a small glass of wine before I get there. Fifteen minutes later I pull into the staff car park at the restaurant. I walk in through the staff entrance, the staff know me here and always seem happy to see me but maybe just their work faces. I find Matteo in the kitchen giving the head chef Luis a mouthful about a plate of food being wrong. It’s all in Italian but that’s what I guess. Matteo turns around and sees me standing there with a not so amused face. Luis nods and gets to work on my usual order of steak with Mediterranean roasted vegetables and potatoes. Matteo quickly ushers me out of the kitchen and to the table he always reserves for me when I come here. Before I even have chance to settle he chirps up “So Mr Broody what has your knickers in a twist today?” I pierce my eyes at him playfully responding “Nothing major just that intern who delayed for a month came in for her induction meeting this morning. She’s going to shadow me tomorrow. The thing I was slightly shocked about was that she would not tell me why she’s been off. Clear boundary. Wouldn’t say a thing just that it was personal.” “Oh, I mean she doesn’t have to tell you but I can see why it rattled you a little bit. Do you think she’s safe?” “I kept it professional. No personal questions, however I didn’t notice anything obvious.” Matteo nods and after a pause says “at least you have the day with her tomorrow to figure her out a bit. Just let me ask. You have never been intrigued by an intern before why now?” “I never usually do the intern meetings but Lauren was busy today so I said I’d do it. Also her competence is amazing so to risk loosing this internship must’ve meant it was something big.” My food then comes out and Matteo leaves me to eat and once done I leave. At home I ponder on his words. Tomorrow I may be able to dig a little deeper. For now. I need to try and sleep.
